HEMA android app

Has anyone on here used the HEMA app for android? The reviews on Google Play are a bit up and down and it sounds like they update popular 4wd areas (Vic highlands, FNQ for example) but are a bit behind in their updates for the less popular areas (possibly WA). I have a couple of free mapping apps (Memory Map & Backcountry Navigator) which are pretty good, but is it worth the $29.99 for the HEMA app? Considering their standalone navigators are upwards of $600.

I would research who updates the app. If it's from hema then you would think it's legit. apart from the maps I would think the hardware is just another type of ipad specialising in maps so they can charge 600 for it. Try a couple of the 4wd pages on Facebook or 4wd action forum they will have a better idea

the 4wd app

is only available for apple.  I havevthe hema android app and it's of very limited value.   Also important to note if you're using it away from mobile coverage you need to download the maps first

I put the question up on 3 4wd forums and 2 fishing pages and have had limited replies so either no one uses it, or they don't care to review it. Oziexplorer is a popular response I'm getting so will look at that. My brother just went to the tip of Cape York last week using the HEMA app and said it was great. But some of the reviews I read about the HEMA standalone GPS suggests the WA maps are rather outdated so I'd imagine the app wouldn't be any better. Cheers fellas

I've seen the Hema mapping 4wd around a few times in some fairly remote areas of wa so I'm guessing their maps will be getting upgraded pretty shortly.

Maverick

Tue, 2015-04-07 09:51

Maverick is available on Android for free & to upgrade to Maverick Plus cost a whole $7.00.
Looks good & will test it out in 2 weeks when we head to Steep Point.
The good thing is, mobile coverage is not required (so they say).
All based on the GPS in the phone.
Can add waypoints, has bread crumbing & gives you plenty of map options & overlays to select from.
I'll let you know how it goes when I return.
cheers & stay safe.

I used to have Maverick when I was into Geocaching and quite liked it for that purpose. Just being able to put in a GPS mark and go straight to it was handy. Never used it for touring though so will be interested to hear how you go

I have the Hema maps for android on my phone and my notebook. In a nut shell I would not buy it again.

I bought it for 4wd tracks for when we go touring, but it is way below par compared to a paper map.

You have 3 types of maps - satelite, street and terrain.

When using the terrain map for example over a large area eg looking at the  map from Rockingham to Mandurah, it looks the real deal. But, when you want to focus in on a specific area you loose all detail, no tracks show up and whilst looking at it, using the Satelite map is slightly better but it still looses the detail such as contour lines, marsh areas, drains etc.

If you want to use in built up areas such as the city, then it will be perfect for you, but  no good if your wanting to get off road.

I can post a few photos if you want me to

Yeah sounds like some of the feedback I received off the 4wd forums. Would love to see some pics if you can put them up. I'm out at Leinster so if it struggles near the metro area, wouldn't be any good out here. Looks like I'll be saving myself $30

Here are the pics. In order from wide into close. The last two are the same, but one is in terrain and the other satelite. As you can see as soon as you get closer the detail is gone and thats not what you want when you need to rely on a map.

Yeah that terrain one is a bit silly. Yes its flat out here but not that flat. And there is at least 2 well used tracks off North Road not marked. Well used as in graded gravel roads. Don't think HEMA is for me. Thanks shortly
