Dont own one but looked into getting one for a while, i find it too stiff but it does look good, there is an american company Dblue that uses a similar blank TC4 and is highly praised by anglers in America and only a fraction of the cost,  good luck in your choice.

Hey Justin,

I've actually got one coming tomorrow thanks to Sam and James :D

They look great, and seem like good rods. Can't wait to try it out!

If you don't have any luck finding one, have a chat to Cuthbad about the Franklin and Loomis rods. There slightly more expensive, but I hear there better rods.

Loomis and Franklin

Tue, 2010-10-05 23:04

Tried the Tiralejo 13 ft and found it to be way to heavy for what i was doing.

Ended up going going a Loomis and Franklin 13ft 3 piece. Great rod, alot lighter, came with a medium and heavy tip too.

Comes with a nice rod tube too, great for when i am travelling and fishing. I get the L and F, my Tcurve 400 spin, Uglystick 7 ft 2 piece, 2 trout spining rods and my barra rod all in the one tube!

Got it modified to have a high mount reel seat too, so now i can choose to have it either high or low mount.

Tiralejo

Wed, 2010-10-06 01:07

Hey Mate,

I have had the 13ft Tiralejo for a couple of months now and i'm really impressed so far, great casting distance with minimal effort and nice and light for a long days surf casting.

The fact the you can adjust the position of the reel up and down the butt is a also a good feature as some of the Daiwa surf rods seem to be an exceptionally high mount which can be uncomfortable.

Would highly recommened the rod, so much so that i'm thinking about getting a 9ft version to add to the collection.

If your looking for a reel to match check out the Daiwa Windcast Z5500, a perfect fit.

Cheers Simmo

Thanks for the feedback

I read on a review online that the adjustable reel seat could be a bit flimsy. Is this the case or just ghat reviewers opinion. I am looking for a rod to cast heavey baits and sinkers as far as I can like a 8oz grapnel with a whole herring or the likes

I bought a 12 foot a few months back. Tested it out with a bronzy of about 6kg. Went really nice. Can dry cast 150+ meters as well. There on clearance at the moment so dont pay full price. Have had no problems with the reel mount. Mine is set up as low mount for an overhead.

hey mate, for casting

Wed, 2010-10-06 08:51

hey mate, for casting weights like that maybe have a look at the loomis sharkey. Might be pushing it with the tiralejo.

Edit: just saw the tiralejo 1300 Heavy, that would be up to the job of casting big baits....

Ranger in osbourne park wanted $650 for the sharkey though which is robbery. I ordered mine in from a company in south africa and got it for $330 including delivery. The guys name is Khan and the service was great.

Awesome rod and has nice big 16mm guides on the top piece for casting big leader knots. Rated to cast 9oz so no problem with BIG baits

are you using it for spin or overhead mate?

Agreed Cuthbad,  found my L&F elsewhere for much cheaper price...can't believe they can rip us off like that!

I support local business but when you know you been ripped off like that well...makes it hard to justified going back for anything else.

line capacity

Wed, 2010-10-06 21:40

Hey simmo i was looking and those windcast and daiwa emblem pro's not sure if they have a good enough line capacity at under 200m for 30lb line a half decent ray would get close to spooling one of those do you know any other good long cast reels with more capacity

a bit rich

Wed, 2010-10-06 21:58

Hi John

I didnt want to spend too much although saragosa's are great reels, i have come across another website with some more accurate info about daiwa spools and a couple of the cheaper models like the emcast surf and emblem pro these models should hold 270m of .45mm line which is the same size as the 30lb low stretch i was probably going to use and 270m is more like the amount of line i wanted on the spool.  This time i was hoping to get a reel better designed for distance casting and those daiwas have long cast spools come with a spare also.  anyway i will concentrate on the rod first maybe

so did you test out your new combo at cottesloe today?

capacity is a worry then why not put 300m of 30lb braid on the spool first then top shot it with 150-200m of mono.

What about a fin-nor. They hold a tone of line, and are slightly cheaper.

Saragosa/Fin-Nor

Thu, 2010-10-07 22:44

I checked out the Saragosa and Fin-Nor options but the reels are way to heavy. Plus i'm not impressed with the Saragosa, have a 4000 size that i'm about to send my second spool back in the last 3 months after the "special titanium coating" or whatever they call it around the spool lip has blackened and gone back to bare metal, not good for constantly running braided line over........

One the Windcast spool capacity, In the surf i'll only fish 20 to 30 pound braid as a rule so i still maintain maximum casting distance. I managed to get 300 metres of Nitlon braid as well as 50 odd metres of 25lb mono as backing, if i get spooled with that much line on the reel that i put that that down as a loss and chuck the spare spool on..... Not a big fan of skull dragging the fish to shore. Laughing

Hope that doesn't happen to my gosa aha. The 18000 is pretty heavy, but feels comfortable on the tiralejo. For sharks in the 3m range its a pretty good set up, rather than using the old overhead

saltiga surf

Sat, 2010-10-09 12:46

I am thinking of saving a bit more and maybe going the saltiga surf, looks to be a great reel with a long cast spool. not a bad idea matt re the braid backing i will probably go with that as most long cast spools dont have huge capacity

cheers

Baitrunner LC has great line

Sat, 2010-10-09 12:57

Baitrunner LC has great line cap, saltiga surf spin scratches easily and apparently isnt as great as it seems according to other forums.

ok

Sat, 2010-10-09 13:01

i was looking at the baitrunners on shimano's australian website and most of their reels in the baitrunner variety had no specs listed and just a TBC so i couldnt get any of that sort of info.  i havent heard any bad stuff about the saltiga but i will definately research a bit more

When looking for reels

Sat, 2010-10-09 13:13

When looking for reels google in stuff like "shimano baitrunner lc forum" can be used to find things about reels fast, since someone else already posted somewhere asking the same questions, if im not mistaken the baitrunners are a discontinued model, line cap is 600yds of 12lb mono max drag 6kg.

Sat, 2010-10-09 18:22

Then i think like what Matt mention before spool like 300m of braid backing and then however much length you need of mono topshot, i can honestly say i never used past 4oz sinker when it came to surf fishing or bank fishing, but imo the baitrunner LC is looking very nice at the moment for what your doing the max drag setting also matches it at 6kg max drag , theres one on ebay atm 270 delivered or around that from UK, good luck in your choice.

The tica is tried and hammered by american surf fishos for a while now especially the tica scepter, it is heavier yes but thats about it, smooth drag, metal body, if you want to wait abit more penn is releasing a new reel penn battle very nice reel and at the price point of 100-120 its a great price, heres a link of it in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibQULalUzZc they are using the 5000 size with 20lb max drag, largest is 8000 size 25lb max drag.

this one is the base model of the battle but the drag system is the same less bearings but looks to be still the good priced at around 60-80
