great place

yep its a good place and remote , plenty of stories have been shown up in previous threads which would be worth a read. do your own sounding around as theres no big reef structure etc and watch the bottom on your sounder for weed / grass in the hollow sections   enjoy

Got back last night AJ

Sun, 2011-07-17 10:13

We had a brilliant week catching Macks to 25 kg, yellow fin to 12kg, cobia to 9kg, Reds to 9kg, Spangles, Snapper, Robinson Sea Bream, Coral Trout, Coronation Trout, Rankin Cod to 9kg, Pearl Perch, Moses Sea Perch, Job Fish and Pan Snapper to name a few. This was all on a full moon. A word of warning. The track in from Quobba Station to Gnaraloo is very bad at the moment. They have had a lot of rain and the low lying areas have turned into pools. It took us twice as long as normal to get out and we were lucky. be prepared to wade through the ruts to check depths and the correct line. I will also write a full report and post pics soon.

Looking forward to reading your report.

Thanks for the info Dave, thats a great help mate. sounds like ya had a ball out there. I was gunna target spanish macks as I have never had the pleasure of catching one so trolling near the reefs would be the go yeah? had a great time last year just land based fishing catching massive tarwhine, golden trevally, spangleys and a monster shark in the bay but looking forward to heading out on the boat. 4 weeks to go. u beauuuuuteeeeyyyy!

Macks

Tue, 2011-07-19 13:42

Hi AJ

We got all of our Spanish Macks drift baiting over some of our spots, mostly in 40mtrs of water. We used our sounder to its potential and drifted baits out when we could see the larger fish under us in mid water. It did not take long from there. We did troll the back of the reef a bit both North and South. All we got was quite a few Shark Mackerel which did entertain us for a while. We kept one and filleted it for the homestead. Paul and Collene will appreciate any fish. We targeted the Spanish Macks on a few days and found them to be in good numbers. We even got a few on the jet lures at 10 - 12 kns. We always use the jets. If you do not have any, get some. We found good numbers of good sized yellow fin in 50mts which took the jets willingly. I will put up my report when the photos have come through. If you are looking for some good ground in close, you can't go past heading north for 4nm and looking around in 15 - 20mtrs. There is some great ground around in close and you will have a lot of fun anchored in this depth.

I hope the report is helpful when i post it. You will have a great time up there if you are willing to work hard.
