GillNetting

Hi all,

A mate of mine has his gillnet license and a 30mtr Gillnet, we are looking at going tonight and have no idea around perth where we can nett. The book provided with the license is really hard to understand and we dont want to do the wrong thing and get busted.

Any help is grealy appreciated.....

Have a look at todays date and you will see why the answer is what it is.

To my knowledge you are not allowed to net anywhere in the Swan River, check up on the fisheries site for  all the info you will need.

GILL NETTING

Fri, 2011-04-01 11:42

i suppose those responses were inevitable as this is a "fishing" site and fishing and "netting" don't really go hand in hand!!

The drinking of beer waiting for fish to swim in the net.  Don't mind it myself. ;)  (for bait only)

Thanks

Fri, 2011-04-01 11:52

To all that have responded thank you very much. The only reason we will be netting is to get bait, kick back drink quite a few coldies. As I wanted to do this the LEGAL way, this is why i asked, im sure alot of users of this site have netted previously for bait and try scooping for a few crabs. Not all of us are lucky enuf to have a boat ;(...once again appreciated to all the ppl that have had a sensible response

gill netting

there's a difference to going down the river/estuary and casting a line and catching a couple of bream or herring or whiting and going down and wading out with your net and catching 150 bream/herring or whiting and having everything you don't want end up dead, i for one don't agree with it and i'm sure most people on this site wouldn't either.

i can agree for some part of what your saying

Fri, 2011-04-01 12:20

but ive been netting about 25 times
and its great fun so relaxed.
pass the time wading for crabs.

Theyve banned netting in places liek the swan so more vulnerable species dont get caught.
We only ever usually get 30 mullet for cray bait and the odd few tailor.
Like bottom fishers wait for a bite we wait for a splash in the net.
A relaxed way to do it seen as tho my uncles in his 70's now so its easier on the body.

They were just having a joke mate.  Don't let it get to you.

As for catching 150 fish.  Pretty sure you have to check your nets quite often, well, I check every 10 minutes - having said that, usually have a few to pull out by then.

netting

Fri, 2011-04-01 12:01

i for one have never netted, but i've gidgied cobbler , scooped crabs, caught just about everything i want to on all sorts of tackle , dived for crays you name it but stringing a net and catching whatever swims in there during a couple of hours or all night doesn't appeal to me i like to pursue all sorts of things but i also enjoy the skills involved in "chasing" whatever i am targeting and the bycatch in nets that ends up dead is not good for anyone!!!

I was under the impression

Fri, 2011-04-01 12:42

I was under the impression gill nets were banned. If your mate got a license surely there would be some pamphlets etc giving info on where you can fish supplied by fisheries. You maybe should've gone to their website first.

I quite enjoy setting a net

Fri, 2011-04-01 13:02

I quite enjoy setting a net when in exy for bait or a few mullet to smoke.

As long as you check your net quite often I can't see any harm in it.

You can only net between dawn and dusk and must be near your net at all times. (I think it may be from 9am to 5pm, not too sure)

Places to net and all other info is provided in the fisheries pamphlet. Its pretty easy to understand.

netting peel-harvey estuary

Fri, 2011-04-01 17:41

Hi Jasfishing i like to catch my own bait (mullet) and use a gillnet for this perpose on a wednesday night at mandurah.

If you look at pages 27&28 of the booklet fisheries gave you (or should have) when you got your licence these pages tell you the areas you can use a gill net in, and the times that you can set your net. Remember to check it every hour as this reduces the by-catch you may get and also allows you to not to exceed your allowable catch limit. The fisheries enforcement officers are doing a great job down here so keep a close eye on your catch count and sizes as applicable.

Good netting

Netting

Fri, 2011-04-01 18:44

When I need some fresh bait or mullet, I will stick the net in one of the channels south of town on the low tide. I am never more than 50 metres from the net and check it as soon as there is a splash, pulling the boat across as I check it. I use 3 1/4 inch mest that cuts out most of the small fish  and usually stops the bigger mullet, the last fish I want in the net is tailor because I hate mending where they have eaten their way out.
