messed up world we live in. At least when you fish the ocean you have a gaff. Wouldnt help in this instance where their own equipment was used to hit them with. Even if they were able to injure an attqacker they would probably be charged with assault.
Thoughts go out to the fishermen.

At least if they had a tire iron, and you used a knife, you'd at least have a chance in court. If they arent going to kill you or cause greivous bodily harm, then using a knife is going to get you in big trouble. Of course, the question is how do you know if they're going to bash you to an inch of your life?
Hopefully the bastards that did this get caught and see the world through bars for a fair while.

problem is these sorts when court get suspended sentences and let out again... normal sentence is 6 months suspended!
My mate keeps a short little very sharp gaff with him when he fish's alone at night in that area.
The area is also where a lot of druggies use the park next to Ascot Waters Marina for their " fixes" , so good chance is this was junkie crime again.
I have been very wary leaving the marina late at night, as the walk back to the far car park leaves you very exposed when carrying gear.
Some nights groups of ten or more hang around in that far car park drinking booze and just eyeing out who comes & go's

Sad state of affairs when you get into trouble whilst fishing.
IF they are ever caught, the magistrate would see that they were struggling with their place in society, or Dad used to drink too much, or the usual bullshit excuses that get them off. How many times do you see on the news a young offender, say 16, that has 10+ convictions, in and out of court, well known to police etc etc, but keep getting off.
My kids are definately in the lowest desirable, most descriminated against category - White, educated and from a supportive family.

I dream to be able to send my kids down to the local jetty/beach whatever, whenever they want like i used to with nothing but thier fishing gear, some food and drinks and a mobile phone only to call me to come and pick them when they've had enough just like i did growing up because i'm sure they are not going to want their old man down there cramping their style just so they can have a fish.

It's always been the same since I was a kid. On their own these types are inclined to run away. Once they group up they become vicious bastards knowing full well they can get away with just about anything. The example of the father being killed in Geraldton while playing with his kids still strikes clear in my mind. Look at what happened there....... SFA. Damn right on the Gero incident Brother.....Similar event occurred in Mandurah to a much loved footballer - family and friends devastated and no justice delivered to the mother fuckers that were involved.
The effect this has had on some of my mates is unbelievable, let alone on the young family - and at the end of the day, the Guilty parties (well, not according to the magistrate) and their families couldnt give a shit as usual.
All it leads to is a normal, hard working individual taking the law into their own hands and ending up in jail for life themselves - no-one wins

I think the best thing is for anyone fishing alone is to take a couple of vicious dogs with you( on a lead of course) My brother went on a trip to New Guinee recently and at most mines that is their first line of defence, a cage full of mongrel dogs ready to kill. Needless to say most mines don't get touched by the savages.As reported on the news a gang of seven and these poor fellas were attacked with a wheel brace and beer bottle......gutless scum.

I fish late at night around this part of the river and except for seeing dodgy blokes (apart from ourselves) sat in carparks have had no troubles.
Would hate to think what I would do in that situation.

one of the blokes i work with
son was attacked in the early hours of saturday morning , was riding his skateboard home around 2am (to drunk to drive)when a ford laser pulled up and three blokes jumped out and demanded his wallet to which he refused they then king hit him to the ground , he managed to get up and run off and hid in some bushes till the car left . wonder if it was the same pieces of shit losers that did this

Not good for trying to attrack people careas to aussie and i agree with lots of the comments but the laws have changed and not by any means recomending it but if it was 10 to 2 i would stab as meany of them with my bowwie fishing knoke and take my chances in court as the courts look faverobale on these poor disadvatage plebs off society and i would take my chances especially if i knew i was in that bigger trouble come on 10 to 2 whatevre it takes to defend yourself

but i heard of someone who curb stomped and killed another guy while he was getting mobed by a dozen blokes and got away with it as self defence. so i guess pulling out your fishing knife and giving it a swing or two wouldnt be pushing it. just make sure they dont have a bigger knife :P

I had a mate i used to train with who got robbed by 3 guys and he luckily got the better of them and he ended up on assult charges for not disclosing his martial arts back ground and he ended up winning and thank god now the law has changed i would always defend myself and use what ever force i deamed necesary at the time

I have trained for the last 10 year's. The more i learn't to defend myself, the more i learn't i'm not alowed to use it.
I'f i hurt someone who attack's me then i am in the wrong.(wtf)
In this case with multable attackers it is probaly the only time you could get away with deffence.
( The Force last night(Drug dealer 3 to 5 years(deserves it) Man assults pregnant woman and bash's 2 old men. 6 month's suspended sentance)

I live very close to where
I live very close to where this happened and fish there regularly and have recently noticed more "groups of these types" hanging around. They are obviously cowards and choose their targets as i have either been lucky or they are not so keen to ask a 6'2 130kg tattoed bloke for a smoke. Never the less i'll definately think twice about fishing there in future on my own after dark.

First thing you need to say
First thing you need to say when the cops arrive is that one of them had something in his hand and you were shit scared and thought they were going to kill you. Then afterwards go and see a physc and get treatment for the nightmares your having and tell them your now scared to leave home. :-) Will help with the self defence aspect when it goes to court.
