Furuno GP32 Waypoint Download
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Tue, 2017-10-31 13:54
Looking for some help from the FW brainstrust.
My cousin has an old GP32 that has a tonne of waypoints on it that he wants to download onto his PC. We've worked out he needs to connect the unit to the PC via a RS-232C cable which I have but mine has a rectangular plug.
Can I cut the RS-232C cable I have and splice it to the NMEA wires coming out of the GP32 power cable to download the waypoints to the PC?

No card slot?
Not even a full-sized SD?

Nah mate, it's a much older unit but I’ve been in touch with Rhys and he says I was on the right track i.e. cutting up a RC232 cable and connecting to the Furuno NMEA wires.

the GP32,s have been around
the GP32,s have been around for eons and still used, even the tug Im on now built 2015 has them, so shouldnt be any problem getting support.

Try moose knuckle on the site. He retrieved all my gps co-ords of my old hummingbird which died and has done the same for a few others.

Thanks Ash - good to see I'm appreciated
Yep I can sort most out - will admit Furunos are one of the hardest to do. I have made up interconnect leads for Navman and others so quietly confident the GP32 I can dodgy up a cable to talk to a laptop which at the least will give a printout. What program is he running on the computer?

Yeah I was interested in the same thing, I thought the modern chartplotters with mapping would have made these redundant. Are they more sensitive for setting a course etc?

They are used to interface
They are used to interface into desktop plotters, older AIS and Radar/ARPA etc, no other features are used but they are very accurate reliable and I guess interface easily.
Even had one on our tuna boat 14 yrs ago in my cabin and only used for setting a guard/anchor zone in case deckies nodded off.
Modern chart plotters with a decent screen size for commercial are outrageously over priced and ECDIS is usually used (Electronic Chart Display) which is a desktop computer with approved mapping program.
When your 12" integrated standard plotter loses its plot, bye bye $5k-$10K and with ECDIS you can put whatever computer screen you want
