Fishing in Mandurah

Hey guys,

First post here so be gentle :)

Used to do a heap of fishing when I was a lot younger, with the old man. Didn't really do any fishing for a good 10 years, and now I've been recently really getting the fishing bug.

I've probably gone 10 times in the last month, so I'm really enjoying myself.

The problem I'm having is, for this time of year, I thought the fishing would be better? I've been going to the Dawesville cut, trying to get herring, tailor, whiting etc, just bread and butter stuff, and I've been getting nothing!

Been using quality gear and baits, just not even getting bites.

Is there somewhere you guys can suggest around Mandurah way, where I'll have a good chance at getting some nice tailor and herring? I love eating them, but have been having no luck.

Thanks guys :)

Also, is it better to fish on new moon, or full moon for those types of fish.

I plan to give it a go this Friday.

Cheers,

Kris.

In the cut you should get something, but always IMO better at the turn off the tide. That way your rig doesnt get washed in or out to fast. Just use a herring berley cage or blod, berley, and the traditional spot is the north side near the Port Bouvard Boat ramp. You are bound to get herring there as there is so many people berleying up. I have always liked fishing the south side between the last jetty and the sea, as you have a bigger chance of bigger fish.

For Tailor exactly opposite the herring spot, ie south side on the inner wall of the cut, towards the estuary side, but time is critical. It needs to be just before dark, they bite for about an hr, then home time. Any Tailor gear work, misses used Mulies and I used lures, like cheap Smiling jacks in blue. And another clue is a glow stick just above the bait and lure.

Hopes this helps but havent done much cut fishing since moving up here to Karratha from Parkridge.

hey mate its been dead quiet

hey mate its been dead quiet down there lately. For a couple months in summer i was fishing where neels said to catch tailor and the tailor were everywhere, i would just go down there with little bream poppers an hour before sunset and catch around 25 tailor, ranging from 25-35cm, i would release them all as i was only fishing for fun, then they started to run earlier and earlier and one day we started catching them about 10am right through til after dusk then they one day they just disapeared. Last time i tried was 2 weeks ago and i didnt see one tailor get caught.

Have you tried the beach in front of the cliffs on Vanessa st in falcon? There's a big reef ledge that runs along the beach there, usually a good spot for tailor and herring and even a chance for a mulloway there..

There was times there when the Tailor on the wall was so thick you could jag them. I recall one time when btweeen Jill and I we caught about 100 from about 5-7.30pm. Kept the size ones that where going to die anyway from hook injuries and left the rest to swim free. But not common to see that many. And when they shut they shut off as tight as a fishes butt.

Trolling slices in the middle off the cut gets tailor of bigger sizes all day.

Kris , the moon cycle has a lot to do with peak fishing times, in combination with tides a weather. Other's will have their own theory's about this topic.

I like to fish a few days before , right up to and a few days after the new moon (no moon ). Combine this with a high tide at sunset and you have a good peak fishing time.

The same can be done with the full moon cycle.

I also use the angler's almanac. A small yellow book you can buy at most tackle shop's or newsagent's. It has peak times per month in a easy to read format. I find it is not always correct but over the years using it, i always see some increased activity at the peak times in the book.

Some gold advice off

Some gold advice off Grantarctic there, worth heading!

Has been very slow down the Cut of late, with the larger tidal movements around the full and new moon its usually worth finding some slacker water thereabouts and berleying up well.

The mouths of the Serpentine and Murray rivers feed into the estuary, a search on google earth will show you whereabouts. Some lovely size whiting coming from there at the moment if you can cope with the blowie bycatch.  ;)

Try Tims Thicket, that is a brilliant spot for herring. Go there during winter though, during summer there are too many blowies
