Fisheries is Watching
Took the boys out for a fish this morning as we moved the pots deeper onto the corals last week, so we could seek KGs and Sambos when conditions allow. Have done it a couple of times recently with success, except for the crays which have all been berried, tar spot, setose or undersized males. The pots will come in for the whites soon.
We rebaited and moved our pots around and when done, sent 6kg of shred and fish based burley to the bottom. At this time of year it is small hooks, light gear, soft drags and any decent fish is brought up very slowly so if it is a demersal it can be successfully released. Lots of action, and it was good to see the boys land some Sambos.
My highlight was getting back to the wash down bay and having a chat with the Fisheries Officer. He knew my boat, when we picked up the pots from inshore to move them, how we used the Minn Kota when pulling pots, where we actually pulled our pots up to on the boat and who was with me at the time. Awesome work Fisheries.
I asked about common offences at the ramp. It was really quite disturbing to hear what people do with “white line cray fever”, but refreshing that Fisheries is policing this behaviour.
