Fisheries Officers very active ATM!

I've noticed lately that the Fisheries Officers have been hitting up Minadie and Tworocks a heck of a lot lately and never have i seen such a presense during the week also. On speaking to them they've been giving fines to boaties for;
* Safety gear
* Undersize Dhufish
* Too many fish
* RST
Certainly good to see and they've been staying back late ie waiting for boaties that are coming in after dark.
He did also mention that some boats were comin in with their legal quoter of dhufish but the amount of ppl on board and the size of the fish and the frequency of such boats reiterates the need for the changes coming up in his opinion!
If your going up that way, make sure everything is spot on and cover yourself!

agree though if only the staff numbers could work, which would be hard, it would sure make alot of people think twice about doing the wrong thing, and to actually have the right safety equipment

maybe targetting problem
maybe targetting problem areas, two rocks is fairly out of the way and maybe people try these spots thinking they can get away with more

good point there, but i
good point there, but i suppose that might be a plan, target one area a few days and then catch others out once they think they have it over them, maybe what they should do is give all the pollies a pay cut, enough for the wages for another heap of fsheries officers to patrol all the ramps

Always said they should make
Always said they should make there presence know more . It is a pain but it will also make the people doing the wrong thing think twice before coming in with undersize or to many fish. also it makes you keep an eye on your safty gear (we just noticed our flares were out of date) not wanting a fine is all up to date
Keep coming i say it is a good thing IMO

Hi, I just noticed your comment about out of date flares. Perhaps you guys could clear something up for me.
When I did my RST the fella said the dates on the flares were for professionals. ie. you cannot get into strife for out of date flares on a recreational vessel.
Thanks.

Labels!
Good topic Ryan nice to see things been reinforced. As I understand the (now enorced) legislation, and the officers wanted to get picky, they could ping 'collected' (group catch in one esky) as the skippers sole catch unless labelled - there's food for thought!

Sandy/Russ - Labels
Hi Sandy, I'm assuming you're Russ's partner?
(Oh no, two more couples sharing a logon LOL
)
Sorry for the delay in responding - wife kicked me off LOL
Terry from RFW's original post http://fishwrecked.com/node/13135 refers to the Dept of Fisheries Media Release http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/media/index.php?0000&mr=550
specifically:
22. Labelling of fish
(1) A person who packages or stores fish —
(a) other than at the person’s principal place of residence;
must ensure that a label, as described in subregulation (2), is securely attached to each package containing fish and to each fish that is stored other than in a package.
Storing fish in an esky or kill tank on a boat could be construed as 'other than at a person's principal place of residence' (I won't go near people that live on their boat - as that could be construed as their prncipal place of residence
)
Regulation 22 (3) says labelling is not required for:-
(d) fish
(i) in the possession and under the direct physical control of the person who took the fish; and
(ii) packaged or stored together only with fish taken by the same person;
(e) fish taken by a person on, or who has just completed, a day trip; or
(f) fish taken by a person and packaged or stored with fish not taken by the person, if —
(i) the quantity of fish packaged or stored together does not exceed the total of the maximum quantity of fish that one person may be in possession of in accordance with regulation 16D;
and
(ii) no other fish are packaged or stored by the person.
and...
If the total catch/possession is less than the limit, then if not labelled, it is deemed to be in possession of the person in charge of the boat, esky, freezer, etc, but that's not a problem because the total is under the limit.
If you or they already have a quantity of fish at home, and you were fishing with others, then YOU wouldn't want to be deemed to be in possession of THEIR fish because it wasn't separately labelled while YOU were in charge of the esky, boat, vehicle, etc.
Labelling can be by labelling the container/s, eg a separate labelled bag within the esky, separate labelled esky (just put your name on them...)
want more? LOL
If I get a chance, I'll email Fisheries again (they are getting pretty used to my emails and have always responded pretty quickly).

flares
i told the Fisheries guy they need more of em so they're still active during Marron/Abalone/cray time periods but that makes to much sense perhaps!!!!!!
Fisherking, your flares dont have to be in date but kept dry and in good condition to not get a fine. The test's on out of date flares have been as bad as 50% not working so dont take the risk, buy new flares when out of date. I keep the old ones as spares as in many incidents the MOB has gone through all flares before being seen or rescued!

A knee jerk reaction I think for a to little to late subject, good to here though, Havn't been inspected or seen a fisheries officer in ten year's of fishing some really popular spots, i hope this starts to make a difference. Can any one tell me if fisheries officers are volenteer or payed?
