Fish/4wd
Submitted by james14 on Wed, 2012-06-27 18:20
Hi all,
Recently got myself a Holden Colorado and I'm looking for a place to go for a fish/4wd north of Perth.
I have little to no 4wding experience, so I'm limited on where I can go.
Not really bothered how good the fishing is, just looking for a place to get both done at the same time.
Anybody have any suggestions?
Regards James

as above
ureka do a good one day course up at wilbinga but make sure you have ALL the recovery gear, snatch strap, compressor, shovel, shackles plus any extra stuff you may need but the first three are the essentials, dont rely on
others to help you if you dont at least have the basic stuff.

Fishy is spot on
Your vehicle is your asset and you need to look after it. Get some tuition and the above said recovery essentials. Knowing the terrain is not enough because it changes with the seasons. I have heard good reports about the Colorado so good luck mate and enjoy the great outdoors!

As said above and use a tyre
As said above and use a tyre gauge they will let you know how much you can let your tyres down when you get bogged and a few pounds of preasure can mean the difference between driving out and being stuck. If you are prepared to travelle a bit further then go up to moore river as the tracks and beach north of the licht house are a bit easier that wilbinga for a start.

As above
As all the comments above....I did a 4wd course through work over by the airport and would thoroughly recommend it as a basis, then get some experience but try and find a wingman.
Re. the Pipidinny note (and risking getting shot down here), is Pipidinny not off limits being in the shire of Wanneroo?

Yep but people still go there
And people are still getting hurt which brings more focus from the council. Not to mention the littering that goes on there (and most places). Sadly we see an ever increasing bunch of people out for a good time with no respect for anyone else. With the northern expansion I doubt we will have access to most places for too much longer.

Another great tool that are worth their weight in gold are a set of Maxx Trax. Mine have paid for themselves many times over out at wilbinga.

Good point tantrum, I have
Good point tantrum, I have borrowed these from a freind whilst bogged in mud at Pardoo and they were great.
Not too keen on the $300 price though. Has anyone seen a similar cheaper option, or made their own??

I dont think you should need
I dont think you should need them! experience will tell you whats makeable and where you shouldnt go.
dont expect that because you have a 4x4 you can go anywhere and dont go in full steam ahead. at times you will have to (soft beaches) but imho tracks wont get you out anyway.
gain experience slowly and at lots of different spots , go lanno backbeach for a cruise then the old way to wedge or attack the dunes . sand is not the same at all the beaches .
better off buying a compressor and tyre gauge imo , its all fun trying so enjoy

you've obviously never tried them
I've seen them (max trax) get a car out buried to the sills with all 4 wheels spinning and one set at the back wheels
out in seconds once dug in

no , never needed them
on all the beaches iv driven in the 20+ years of doing so! the inflatable bag from the exhast pipe works just as well (if you position it correctly , otherwise pop!)
more bling for the roofrack i guess....

Another spot south of the river
is Tim's Thicket. It isnt nearly as bad a Wilbinga and IMO is a good place to starts. Then White Hills has more boggy areas, but still way easier than the northern ones.
As mentioned have good recovery gear and deflate tyres, then have a compressor to pump them up. Not letting tyres down just cut the place up and make it more boggy.
One crucial hint, dont head to the "hard compacted wet sand". It often isnt and is a huge rish off a flooded car if you get bogged there. Better a bog above the tide mark than below.
Good luck.
