Filleting at sea
Submitted by Cjsurf on Tue, 2011-12-20 18:59
Here's one for the debate, I was talking to a mate who saw a boat filleting fish and stowing away before returning to marina... It's illegal yes but whats the deal with filleting/cooking on board. And especially people who do this tend to throw the remains overboard which is semi wasteful anyone know of the punishment as we all know fisheries have more power than the 5-0

Disposing of frames at sea is wasteful? I beg to differ!
I reckon its best place for it to go, after all that way you're just nicking one fish's meal on the fillet, but you're still letting the scavengers have a crack!
IIRC you can fillet at sea as long as the fillet is 300mm long, skin and scale on, and not a cod and maybe a couple others?

It's clearly written in the fisheries book of kind of fish you've got land as a whole.

agree Jamie
i knock the fillets off when back at home , freeze the frames, and take them out to sea the next trip to feed other fish
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Agree with Till on the frames
Agree with Till on the frames at sea. I rarely fillet at sea but always take frames back filleted at home and discard them when heading out for that reason, better than at the tip. That said, why can't you catch a fish say on an overnighter (or during the day), fillet and eat it?
As far as I care to bother though, you can fillet as at sea as long as there isn't a slot limit on a particular fish ie cods (estuary, Rankin etc), Barra in the Fitroy/Kimberley to name a few but you get the jist.

Oh, the other thing I found
Oh, the other thing I found out, not that it mattered. Was told by the fisheries guys that boarded our boat at the Monties when we filleted and trunked a mackerel so as to fit in the freezer, each bagged up portion of 2 fillets is considered to be one fish. So the one fish we portioned and froze became 3. Go figure, lucky we were still under our bag limit..

I know it looked like I asked
I know it looked like I asked a question, but I was actually saying why can't you''? Of course you can. As long as the fish is legal size etc and within bag/possession limits for the day, enjoy the fruits of what you did for the day.
Cheers

Hey Mullows, I thought you
Hey Mullows, I thought you could but just found myself in some interesting situations. What if you sort out your fish at 4.30, wash down, clean up, and then get caught at 6 with portioned up pieces of fish ready to go in the frypan. How do you prove they were size?

I guess at the end of the day, it's a trust and general awareness thing ... I mean, how much will you and your family eat while on board? And how many boat will do the same? And overall, how many rec fishermen got boats with these facilities, i.e. cooking and staying overnight?! Plus if you're staying overnight, I guess you're allowed 2x bag limit anyway, IMO, exactly the same as you do two trip in two following days!

If you stay overnight and can prove
that you stayed on an Island, then you are allowed 2 days worth off fish, fillets etc. But if you stay on a boat overnight, only one days worth still. This is in the Pilbara. Dont know about the SW, Gascoyne etc.

Could you imagine our Grandparents having this kind of discussion 40/50 odd years ago? It's sad that we have to have all these rules but if we don't, there won't be any fish left for our grandkids?
I think as long as you are doing the right thing and following the daily bag limits, who cares if you eat a few fillets before you get back to the ramp?
I fish for the future - Cause I can't bloody catch anything!
