Feeding Great Whites
Submitted by spook on Thu, 2012-04-05 07:40
I was just watching news about the Great White off Kalbarri, the shark came up and ate a huge piece of bait in the water obviously put there to get the shot. My opinion is if you dont feed it next to the boat they wont recognise a boat as a feeding opportunity. I could be wrong although it is something to think about after the bloke that got taken in busselton on his anchor rope. I think most people are smarter than that though

On his anchor rope? Was he on
On his anchor rope? Was he on the surface? Or ascending/descending along the rope? I still havent heard the full story
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Thats what I saw it when I looked first, but watch it side on and it looks like a white. The white underbelly and the pointed dorsal are things to look for.

Definitely a white
But as any crayboat owner will tell you sharks have been following around crayboats for decades waiting for them to discard old bait - out at the islands the tigers that do this are huge ..........equally so do the snapper who also follow crayboats for the same reason ........great fun on fly gear when you used to be able to go out with them and fish (unfortunately now even that is illegal as it is "fishing" whether or not you intend to catch and release)

Sharks should be left alone
Sharks should be left alone and we know the risks when we go into the water!

great white...don't think so
making a judgement from the video is a bit hard but looking at the nose shape and particularly the top of the tail it does't look like a great white to me the top lobe of the tail does not fit the usual configuration of a gw top lobe is way longer than the bottom. I'm not saying others are wrong just that to me the shark looks like a big bronze whaler.

In a few shots it does look a
In a few shots it does look a bit like a bronie, but bronzies dont have a white belly like that with clear edges. When he says "thats the one we want" at the start, you can see the tail is fairly even too. When they say "blue holes" you can see the dorsal profile and its definitely not a bronzie. To sharp corner on the trailing edge.

white!
im up in barri now and i can tell you for certain it is a 3.5m juvinille white. ive seen the footage fm deano at the tackle shop, the reason they had the bait for it was for fisheries on the boat to confirm it was a white! and in the background 100m away is the beach at blue holes! there is a bigger one hanging round as well around the 4-4.5m mark and there is a huge bronzy hanging with them! these sharks have made it their temporary home atm and arent going anywhere. fisheries have asked anyone who puts pots out to bring back their old bait n not throw it over the side! there is alot of indecision up here atm with wot to do with them! usually they come in then disappear back out deep but these things arent going anywhere! So if you do come up here w yr boat DONT BE A PEANUT AND GO N TRY N FEED IT FOR A PHOTO COS FISHERIES WILL COME DOWN ON YOU!

no expert but that looks
no expert but that looks like a white to me.
dont think there would be too many going in the water with them atround. it is their habitat and people should respect that. yes they are a threat but so are we. are you going to go out and hunt down and kill any person that attacks another. i dont think so , so why should we go and hunt down and kill a shark that is only doing what comes naturally to them

Im probably going to get shot
Im probably going to get shot for this but here goes anyway..........
I dont believe we should all go out and kill all the sharks so all the oceans are safe, but when one hangs around at a major tourist destination in summmer........well......I think for the safety of swimmers it would be a good idea to get rid of it.
Yes I know its the sharks territory, and yes people who swim in the ocean should know the risks BUT......
I value human life more than that of a bloody fish? We dont need to go into a shark killing frenzy.......just remove the ones causing problems, I dont believe they are endangered anymore are they?.
Why is it we can kill fish, chooks, sheep, cattle to eat to keeps us alive, but suggest killing a shark for the safety of a few surfers/ divers/ swimmers and theres an uproar?
Just my opinion.
Cheers

At Least
The comments by Hairyone are about the most sensible ones I have read on this matter,The Faulkner family comments ?are you going to go out and hunt down and kill any person that attacks another. i dont think so , so why should we go and hunt down and kill a shark that is only doing what comes naturally to them.Well as a society we do just that,in faact the police service takes a great deal of effort to catch these people ,but we do not kill them, but I think in some cases,we should.but back to the shark situation,I wonder how brave some of you will be if actually confronted by a GW or very big Tiger shark and it attackes you, or someone with you.I know that I would do all I possible could to stop my diving companions being injured or killed,But I am probably seen as out of tune with to-days conservationiest's but I am sorry ,people or sharks, people will always win in my vote

Years back
When I was doing some cray fishing we used to get stalked by very large sharks. It became quite scarey and dangerous so we used to shoot the buggers with a 303. Either that or fall overboard and get chomped. Sometimes we have to do things like that to make an area safe. Sad but necessary. Same applies in a popular recreation area.

yeah u say its just a fish
yeah u say its just a fish but when more attacks happen and that on fish then becomes 10-20-50-100 it starts to add up and half the time they end up kulling the wrong shark, its just rediculous IMO.

There is talk about tagging
There is talk about tagging it, so they will know if its the same shark hanging around or not. Besides like I said.....Im not sugesting a bloody open season on sharks.....just the removal of a problem one in a tourist area in tourist season. Any effort to make it a bit safer is a step in the right direction if you value human life over a fish. IMO

yeah i understand what ur on
yeah i understand what ur on about and yeah they have been taging GW before and that is a great way of seeing if it is the same shark in the area, but so what if it is the same shark, thats where it lives, im shore u wouldnt be happy if someone broke into ur territory and harased u, would u?? simple things like not throwing bait over the side will prevent them from associating us with food. 100 million sharks are killed each year and yet people wanna start kulling them, c'mon

No one said anything about
No one said anything about culling all the sharks young fella, just the large GW that ate the diver, Which is more than likely the same one seen 50 mtrs of the beach a day later. If its proven to be a killer then a 303 is the best way to tag it.

locals
i can tell ya now if you get caught feeding or baiting up around there to see the shark the locals are gona get pretty pissed off. They didnt agree w the bait being used to get it to the surface so fisheries could see it but steps are being taken to deal with it. they are still trying to gps tag it so they can see where its going. the pros were asked to move their pots from around there and they have so everyone is rather concerned about this. The fact that the surf break is just there at blue holes and w jaques not too far away. Will know more in the next cpl days from the boys. but on a good note the mullas are running and there is a sniff of pinkies off the stones and its only gona get beta this weekend! its a shit fight up here already with people everywhere but all good if anyones up here and wants to go throw a line give me a buz on 0448035504 n will be glad to go for a throw.

dreaming
guys your all dreaming its a white there was 2 of them here and a xos bronzy hanging with them! all my mates that work on the boats here have seen it near the boat while pulling pots and i tend to believe them they all know their sharks, there is footage of the large bronzy taking a bait but the other footage ive seen is a white! if any of you have ever seen a 12ft bronzy then you know how big and how wide their head is!

I'd like to know what makes
I'd like to know what makes it a "Rouge Shark" Is it becuase its swimming in the ocean? Or is it becuase its eating the chuncks of food thrown in the water?
