Exmouth reds

 Hi guys,

Going to Exmouth at the start of August just wanting to know if anyone has caught reds in shallow water. If so what depth?  Cheers

Wont get shallower than 20m unless you get real jammy, 23m is shallowest ive got them in exxy after a fair few local years trying.

If you can find them shallower

They generally aren't as big. The advantage is that you can most likely get them past the Sharks if they are smaller. Any of the larger models out a bit deeper will be hunted by the grey coats in no time.

Only at the murions and beyond.    If you get one on the west side in shallow buy a lotto ticket they are that rare.   They are becoming rarer by the year on the west side even out deeper. There has been hardly any caught this year.  Most people go to peak island and beyond to get reds in shallow 15-30m. They spear some absolute horses regularly.

As Scano said, reds in shallower are generally smaller, I've got reds in 20m in exmouth but have been small, 30m I've got a couple in the 50cm range

the Murians is pretty good fishing, check out the fish sacturaries before you go. Problem with the Murians is it's very tidal with water coming and going from the gulf which attracts bait which attracts Pelagius which attracts sharks! There are millions of the pricks!

Exmouth ground is very flat, and with reds your more looking for fish than ground, they will school in certain depths. If you find reds you will find rankin's spangles etc, if you find rankins reds are not far away.

beware the Murians holds some very very big estuary cod too

tantabiddi side is generally easier to find fish closer to home

I've caught reds in 50-60m

I've caught reds in 50-60m not too far from tantabiddi boat ramp - north side of ramp. If weather permits head south past Yardi creek a few km's and look for ground in 60-70m. If you want to head to Murions make sure the winds aren't from the north. The seas can get real rough between the mainland and the island...Any decent fish we manged to hook got sharked almost instantly which was heart breaking.

Have caught reds up to 10kg in 12m of water in Exy but that was a while ago now. Spot only produces sharks now.
