exmouth drama
we spent the past few days in Exy , Deckie and mate Deano and myself, today we ventured out 12 miles south of the south pasage to escape the winds trolling most of the way down until we came across a good section of ground holding fish, we anchored up and caught a few good fish , when Deano complained of a severe headache and sat down for a while, we started dragging the anchor so it was time to reset the anchor , as we prepared to carry this out , we found out that Dean could hardly speak or move , we feared he was suffering a stroke,
we up anchored and headed back to the south pasage in average conditions and then fast run up the inside, Deans condition was getting worse so we tried to radio EXY sea rescue and found out that they dont work weekdays , we then made contact with a dive charter boat , who then contacted the blue water dive shop in town and had contacted us direct and an ambulance was sent to meet us a Tantabitti ramp , the charter boat also informed us that they had oxygen , and de fib machine and would meet us inside at the ramp .
we made it to the ramp with several calls from both blue water dive shop and then exy police and the charter boat to check on our friends condition and progress. Both the charter boat and us arrived at the ramp at the same time with the ambulance 10 minutes away, the charter boat sent their rib over and two staff over to assist us in getting Dean of the boat which was not easy with a big guy whos not quite concisicious
we put our boat on a mooring and transfered Dean into their rib and put him on oxygen until the ambulance arrived, we managed to beach the rib on the side of the tantas ramp ,then we all transfered dean into the ambulance.
Deckie then went with Dean in the ambulance back to hospital and i returned to my boat to retrieve it. Lucky for me there was another F W memeber bringing their boat up and they all gave me a hand to retrieve my boat. so a big thanks goes out to them as i didnt have much time to talk.
Dean was stabilised in hospital and then a RFDs plane flew him back to perth several hours later where tonight he is in good hands at SCGH
I would like to thank all those concenerd in Exmouth who assisted us , the dive charter skipper and staff, the dive shop and police who all bought it together when needed, it also shows how important a radio ,contacts and assistant from nearby services
Once again , a big thanks to all mike and rob

Geez mate
what a day you just had, Hope he comes good soon without any serious complications.
Glad to hear that there are helpful people around when you need them. Pretty disappointing to hear the Exmouth Sea Rescue only works weekends. So what, people don't go out in boats during the week? Come on

I think what was meant was they dont monitor the radio during the week, only on weekends. Rescues during the week come through the police. Sea Rescue members are on call to respond with a vessel 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
If you wanted to volunteer your time as a radio operator midweek it would be more than welcome.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

My thoughts exactly Dodgy.
My thoughts exactly Dodgy. It takes alot of people to man radios etc in a VOLUNTEER organisation. Especially sea rescue where you need to man radios from sun up to sun down and then some. The guys here in VMR do 6-8hr shifts and it takes alot of people to cover that. In fact if it wasnt for Nona having a home base it would probably all fall to shit. Matt you seem like a good fella but dude think about it before your put finger down on a key.
Cheers Mick

Home base stations
Metropolitan Sea Rescue (Whitfords,Fremantle & Cockburn) have recently invested in a radio system that allows us to monitor the radios from any home that has internet. For example I could monitor Cockburn, Fremantle & whitfords areas from home as it connects to the rescue towers on the coast which we man during the day from the comfort of my home. The system is also mobile as it uses a laptop and all communications are through the laptop with microphone attached. This system would also allow sea rescue group to monitor each others calls. For example a group that monitor 24/7 could monitor a groups radios that do not.
Another option would be to aproach local businesses to see if they were prepared to have radios in the shop to monitor for just this sort of emergency. I know in when I was in Coral Bay this is how they operated.
Luckily in this situation they had phone coverage.
Well done to all those who assisted. Great outcome given the location.

Fair enough
my bad, didn't realise that's how they were run. I would've though the Exmouth Sea Rescue would've been a large enough organisation covering a large enough remote area to have daily coverage. But alas, I was wrong
Real shame for those involed here but good to hear they were able to round up some good help with the use of there UHF and mobile, well done

Hi folks, on behalf of dean i would like to thank you for all your best wishes for his rapid recovery i shall pass them on when we get home. The situation at the moment is he is in Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital in Perth. Scans reveiled a clot at the bottom of the brain where it joins the spinal column. The operationn was done at 3;30 this morning & he remains in an induced coma for the recovery purposes. Since the operation scans have shown that all should be well & they will bring him out of the coma perhaps tomorrow but if he needs more time then he will be put back under. At this stage it is unknown weather any long term damage has been done so we all have our fingers crossed & saying prayers for him.
I would like to thank Blue Water base in Exmouth for the communication link to all the services, Jason the skipper of charter boat Aliikai & his crew that supplied us with oxygen at Tantabiddyboat ramp, the Exmouth police who organised the prompt dispatch of the ambulance from the hospital & finally the doctors, nurses & paramedics from Exmouth hospital for their great work. If not for all of these people coming together to assist us, word has it that Dean may not have made it.
Once again thank you all for your help & wishes & they shall be passed on.
Cheers Rob (Deckie) & Mike (Just Dhu It )

You are very correct in what you are saying. If it wasnt for prompt action from You, Rob and everyone involved he certainly would have been in strife big time.
This situation is called a Subaracnoid haemorrhage and it is very lethal. It is time critical to get to a Tertiary hospital with neurosurgery, and thanks to you and all involved Dean is in good hands. Well done mate and wish him a speedy and full recovery.

long haul
Big John , thanks for the enquiry, dean has had a turbulent ride in hospital since our return, he was put in a induced come for the flight back and we expected that by the time we returned it would have been sorted and he would be comlaining about not finishing his 1st Exy trip, but it turned out to be a large haemorrage on the base of the brain and this took the doctors several weeks to sort before Dean could be bought out of his coma, with several other complications in the following weeks we were finally able to see for the first time on the past weekend , 4 weeks after the incident, Dean is still in intensive care and has just had all of the tubes and drip removed but is still monitored. he can now just talk and put sentences together , he has full use of his limbs and is up to date with what occured and is only missing several hours of the day of incident, next week he is hoping to be moved to shenton park rehab centre were his hard work will start to get his body and muscles back in order i would guess at this stage it will be at least another 6 to 8 weeks before hes good to return home and then think about work, but each day sees more improvement, mike

Thanks to all for your support & positive thoughts. It all gets passed on to Dean. He cannot believe that all these people that dont know him, have put in posts supporting him & his endeavour to get well again. It's truely amaizing what people can do in bad situations to help others out & to be there in the rehabilitation period as well.
I would like to personally thank everyone involved for their help & support, & also a big thanks to my skipper Mike for not only this situation but for getting me back to land safe n sound on many occasions. We cant underestimate the value of a good skipper & crew who put the safety of the folks on board above everything. A fish is only a fish when it comes to safety.

Yes Crasny , we were lucky on the day. The head doctor at Exy hospital was an ex Neuro surgeon from Perth and spotted the symptons quickly, the oxygen from the charter boat at the Tantas ramp we have been told made a big defference, and if we had been 1 hr longer in getting to the hospital Dean would have not been with us today, Cheers for all the well wishes and comments

I've often thought what the
I've often thought what the chances are if something serious happens whilst out either boating or camping around Exmouth of surviving and its good to hear a success story in this case. All the best with the recovery and well done to all those involved in this situation.
I'm going to chase up what contact details are available up here for the rescue numbers and hours etc and see whether I can post something.
It should never be expected or assumed that a marine rescue group in a town of 2500 people will be able to offer the same service provided by the Metro units who have access to over a million potential vollies. In saying that they do do a great job and will help out as much as possible with the resources available to them.
I do know that Bluewater tackle (Bluewater base) monitor the radio during office hours and that there are a number of home base stations that monitor 24 hours. The local police are on the radio, again this will mostly be during office hours. There is also I believe a mobile number for the marine rescue unit too.
In terms of phone coverage, Telstra mobiles are really the only way to go up here and it is suprising the range they have at sea.
Anyway again well done guys, a speedy recovery to Dean and heres hoping that the nursing staff are of the pleasant to look at type!!

is going to happen, bet Dean is so thankful that you two kept level heads and got the medical attention he so desperately needed. Thank goodness also for the volunteers at Sea Rescue, and everybody else that was involved. So glad everything worked out well. I know the panic that goes through your body, your brain is screaming, heart pumping, but I had to stay calm for old fart when he had a very bad asthma attack, the doctor said another 6 minutes and the old bugger wouldn't be here today annoying the shite out of me.

Update
Hi folks, just a quick update in the progress of Dean.
Visiting him last monday (6/6/11) was great, he had all tubes, wires & monitors disconnected. We had a conversation about the event, what happened before & after. His recolection was vague but after a few reminders things seemed to come back to him. There is a point where it all goes blank but i think that may have been where he blacked out. The signs were all good for the move to Shenton Park for re-hab on thursday.
Tuesday & wednesday things took a turn & he had a huge step backwards. Blood preasure was up, temp was up, his speech started slurring & he bacame disorientated again.
The thoughts were that he picked up a 'bug' of some description, the word Menangitis was mentioned but as of yet i havnt heard the results of the lumbar puncture.
Once again a big thankyou from them to all for your thoughts & prayers that are past on to them. I will post any inforation when it comes to hand.
cheers & be safe

Thanx
Thankyou all again for yuor thoughts & concerns. As it turned out it was a hiccup, albeit a large & scary one. The staff at SJGH have done a wonderfull job, as they do, of turning things around, he is back on track & this week all the physios, speech therapists & deiticians will be working on getting ready for rehab again.
The anti-biotics have done their job & with help from the physio he was walkin to & from the bathroom to shower, he even gave himsef a shave lol.
Hopefully we will be able to get in & see him today, being still in 'high dependancy', the visits are kept to a minimum.
Mike & myself will leave it for a while & then start workin on a plan to get him back fishing, he commented on how much he loved just being in the boat & how wonderfull the Exmouth area was so thats the goal.
Again thanx for all your possitive comments & thoughts & they do get passed on.

Two good news stories in one day....
So good to hear the good news about Dean's recovery....thanks Deckie. Please pass on our best wishes, too.
My mate who was kind enough to give me some good fishing spots around Mandurah and Jurien when I got my new boat last November (it was one of his marks where I caught my first dhuie just after last Christmas), suffered a stroke in early January and after spending time in Charlie Gardner and then Shenton Park, finally came home this afternoon. There's still a long way to go but I'm sure being home will speed up his recovery.

Update
Hi folks, i just got back from the hospital visiting Dean & its great to say that he is doing realy well. The antibiotics have worked a treat & the infection that was causing all the drama is just about gone.
His speach is still a little slurred but much betta, sorta like the nite before we went out lol. Seriously, it is improving also is his balance & co-ordination. His memory is still a little 'short term' but we are told that will come back with time.
So far he is still on course for the move to re-hab, word has it possibly this week so it's all fingers crossed, then it will be into the therapy of the speech & physio type.
He was told of all the postings in here that were sending him good wishes & prayers & he sends his thanx to all the strangers that have taken the time to wish him well, as do i & Mike.
Next tuesday will unbelievably be 7 weeks since it happened & he has come a long way since then. From a 'touch & go' situation to where he is now is a credit to the staff of SCGH and a big thanx goes out to them as well.
For those interested i will keep the updates coming until we get him back in a boat.....haha
cheers Rob

I have fished with Jody and others for some years now and wouldn't have a clue if they take any medication or ar allergic to anything ,contact numbers .something you touched on in one of your posts .for all heading on holidays with mates or first time fishers, good advice to keep a book with phone numbers and medical histoy .as I will be doing next time I see Jody. could happen to any one of us at any time and I think the more info you have the better the odds.

Recognising a Stroke
I was sent this some time ago and thought perhaps it was worth sharing. It is obviously more complicated than this but some of us may get something out of it.
RECOGNISING A STROKE
Remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke .
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 000 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
NOTE: Another new sign of a stroke is this: Ask the person to stick out his or her tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

As a volunteer ambo driver, I
As a volunteer ambo driver, I applaud you Alan, for putting this on the site, this is one of the things you learn when doing your Senior First Aid course. It is well worth doing it, particularly if you are a fisho, too many times we get called to boat ramps to attend to situations like this and no one on board knows how to handle it! It is well worth the time and money. And remember guys always call 000 no matter what the situation, its is not only for ambulance, its for police, fire, rescues and any other emergencies. And when going fishing with mates it doesnt hurt to ask if anyone has any allergies or medical conditions, and ask them what you should do if a situation occurs. Happy and safe fishing guys!

Re-hab
Yayyyy hi folks, i am pleased to say that Dean has finally made it into re-hab at Shenton Park. He was moved on wednesday, 7 weeks after the event. They tell me now the hard work starts for him, getting him walking & talking properly will take a few sesions a day & visitors are restricted for a while.
I will get him on here to read all these posts & hopefully get him to join the F/W family so he can enjoy the chat & banter that goes along with all the info that is available at a touch.
Thanx again for all your support & wishes.
Stay safe
cheers Rob

Up-date
Wel folks since the last update we have had a few dramas with Dean. He made it to re-hab as in my last post but from there it kinda went pear shaped. He took a turn for the worse & had to be rushed back to SCGH for tests & ultimately more surgery. He was still getting fluid build up around the wound area from the operations so he needed a shunt to help relieve the pressure.
Well all that took more time but i'm pleased to say that he was ready for the move back to Shenton Park re-hab but because of an outbreak of some gasto bug there he will now be doing his physio & speech therapy from home. Yes folks after 13 weeks away from home he has finally made it. It is a great relief to have him there after all the dramas he has had, so hopefully both he & his lovely wife can get back to living the life they were used to before this all happened. We all lknow it's still a long way to go but being at home will be a huge boost to the healing proccess.
Again i would like to thank everyone for their thoughts & prayers & a huge thanx goes to all the professional people that helped dean get to where he is now, "home". yayy
cheers to all out there in the F/W family take care & be safe.
Rob
