By the sounds of things you are super keen on this egi fishing, which is awesome I must say.

My advise though would be to buy the rod, reel, braid, lures ect for which you like the most yourself.

its always good to seek other input for sure, however ultimately it is you who is going to own and use the Combo for its intended purpose, so you need to be the one that is happy with it.

my advise would be to gather the info you have thus far, make a purchase for what you truly need to get you started, and then get out there and give it a go. The only way to know whether it is all going to work for your circumstances, is to have a crack at it and enjoy the experience of having your first bumper session on the squid. I’m not suggesting this to knock the wind out of your sails, more so to encourage you to get out there and get amongst it, as opposed to multiple posts about much of the same topic. Squid are generally most prolific during the cooler winter months. Get cracking on it as soon as you can whilst their still about in reasonable numbers.

if it is 2500 reel, it should be ok.

for me - i have an exceler 2500 daiwa and a short rod.

the major expense is not the rod or reel but red foil jigs of Harimitsu and Yamashita.

Personal Preference

Sun, 2017-10-08 20:22

The choice of double or single handle comes down to personal preference, some people prefer to have them but others would rather a single, there is no right or wrong choice between them. If you’re torn between the reels and they’re available at a local tackle store I would suggest taking your rod in and seeing which balances the best, purchase which ever feels better matched with the rod and in your hand. I wouldn’t stress to much about this, all options will not impede you from catching squid. Pick what you like and feel is best suited as you are the one using the gear.

I found jigs make more of a difference to the experince rather than the gear. I use a savage 7 foot 2 3-5kg, shimano navi 2500, 8 pound j braid, 10 pound flurocarbon and green with yellow striped yamatishas, work a dream and pretty much never seen a squid not grab it ( also never had a session where i havent hooked the most either) but i put that more down to the jig for sure

Yes, squid can't see the rod n' reel

And as they tend to not actually be a real tough opponent, more akin the dragging a small lump of weed in-- it's all about getting the right jig to them. Are you fishing from shore or boat? makes a big difference, from shore , the longer you can cast, the more you are in the strike zone, which could be anywhere from splashdown to lifting it out of the water. Remember, if they start calling it Egi, price has probably doubled. Really long , light rods seem to be in short supply in most WA tackle shops, whereas, over east, a 9 ' 2-4 kg rod used for estuary luderick would be in abundance. I scored such as rod remaindered cheaply at a camping and fishing show, bought it for catching gardies off the beach, also excellent for squid. Casts a jig on 10lb mono a country mile, which can matter when the water is really calm and clear where I fish for them up north. I use an old BG 15 Diawa, 1000 size equivilant. But a 7 footer would be plenty for a boat.

Simply cannot go wrong with one of these for around $100. I only upgraded mine because I wanted the lighter Stradic ci4 and gave mine to my oldest boy

 Reel wise, you're limited by

Sun, 2017-10-08 14:23

Reel wise, you're limited by your budget. Suggest you read articles by people such as Paul 'Kuma' Carter who is Aussie rep for Gancraft. Not saying you need to have the similar gear to his as he has more than 14 outfits mostly Stellas and Gancraft rods so each outfit will be more or less $1500. Aside from his personal gear he offers some good info on squidding. On this note, AFW is hosting a Yamashita rep talk on squid later this month and you should consider going. Certainly squid are not as hard on gear as some fish can be when pulling them in but that's not where the wear and tear is. It's when you are using the Japanese style of techniques to impart movement to your jig. Anyway, you're just starting out so I think the rod will be more important than the reel at this point as well as jigs. While cheap jigs will catch squid, the quality jigs catch more. Size of reel recommended is the 2500 size although Daiwa sizing is bigger so in Shimano go to a 3000. Use this sizing for other brands. Double handle is more for balancing out the rotor, again for a particular technique.

Although you have chosen the Blackhole rod, the rating is still important as the question is what size/weight jigs are you likely to toss? My rod is rated to 3.5 but I don't comfortable when using my heavier jigs so I'm considering a heavier rod for my 3.5 & 4.0 jigs. With a 3.5 my present rod feels like it's going to snap although it won't. All rods are rated like that with a range. They may be able to take the heavier range but it won't be comfortable and you wont feel secure. I don't agree with many incl some above who poo-poo egi rods and say fishing rods will do. There's plenty in designing a proper squid rod and it's not just taking a bream type rod and calling it egi to justify a higher price. For a start the rod has to be parabolic to absorb the squid's lunges so you don't tear it from your jig. At the same time the rod has to be able to cast up to 25 gram as that's what the heavier jigs weigh. A 4.0 or 4.5 can weigh 40gm if you need such a jig. Then the rod has to be able to handle the ripping techniques to impart movement to the jig. No bream rod can do all that without breaking at some point. Sure some are still catching squid but you can catch them with a handline so why even bother with any rods. The fact that you're getting a proper squid rod is in the right direction. Good luck.
