Submitted by Faulkner Family on Mon, 2019-02-18 16:44
heard on the radio today about the drum lines for sharks along with dectors and beach alarms will be starting in diff locations i think next wek.
do people think that they will help or just a waste of money and resources.
personall i think they are a waste. as it will only tell them if a tagged shark is near by

Wrong,
and your spelling is shit Russ.
They are are smart drum lines, that alert when a shark is hooked.
They dont detect tagged sharks, they catch all sharks, and let the pro know when there a shark on.

It will help for sure. As a surfer, i’ll Feel more comfortable surfing there. It can’t guarantee no attacks, but it will reduce the risk, and that’s what it’s about. The cost is steep!
i think there’s more benefit in commercial shark fishing though. Mr Kelly could comfortably allow more shark take, providing cheaper seafood which people will actually buy (flake at fish and chip shop anyone?), and the government could generate an income whilst solving an issue.

sharks
Only will detect tagged sharks. As most sharks are not tagged limited value but better than nothing. The great whites that have killed people have not been tagged, its all window dressing to pretend they are doing some thing. Too many shark huggers, after all its thier ocean andwe are tresspassing so say the greenie loonies.

Take a bit of responsability for your actions
There are certain locations along our coast that are notorious for concentrations of sharks.
Now, if you are aware that the place where you surf is one of these locations then you are placing yourself at a slightly raised chance of being savaged by a shark. You make the decision for yourself as to just were you will surf and accept the responsibility of that decision.
Just like if you make the decision to drive after dark up north and drive along at 120, if you hit a skippey at that speed it is not going to be pretty, you made the decision to drive at night and at that speed thereby putting yourself at elevated risk.
In both cases you have made a conscious decision to take the action you have decided upon and the associated risks.

I like the risk assessment
I like the risk assessment comparison. Number 1 control on the Hierarchy of Controls is always the most effective.

The elimination control
The elimination control seemed pretty effective up until 1999 when old mate whitey was placed on the protected list and allowed to grow and breed and… surprise, surprise fatal attacks went from a freak event to 14 in 13 years.

Not a surfer are U Meg.
Your argument is a load of shit by the way.
For those of you that are purely worried about the costing, yes I think the $6000 per day paid to the vessel checking them is excessive.
HOWEVER.... Their is a huge financial loss to the southwest and WA as a whole when fatalities keep happening year in year out. Just ask the people in the Byron/Ballina region.
What happened here last year when the Margs surf comp was cancelled was a massive kick in the gutz for those that rely on the influx of thousands coming here spending cash.
If we want to use shit arguments to fuel this debate - Megladon if your beloved pet dog was to maul your grandkids face or worse what do U reckon you'd do moving forward. Ensure none of your grandkids ever go near another dog again?
I'd prefer the Vic Hislop approach. Think of all the cash that could be made selling necklaces.

simple solution 1st one is
simple solution
1st one is tender out a min of 20 kill tags for great whites over 3.5 metres to any charter operator who wishes to buy them
for catch and kill trophy hunters
2 one is set up many more sonar detectors along the coast in a continual network from south to north and tagg as many sharks over 3 metres each year as can be done
lastly , calling for the increase in commercial shark netting is nonsensical , as they dont catch too many large sharks , but will have abig impact on small sharks and demersals
so bad idea that wont help at all
timboon , i think your right re the tourist affect this is having on wa , the gov wont openenly say so , but you have to wonder what setting up shark alarms and flashing lights at top tourist places is also saying to tourists and what impact that will have ?? will they feel safer ??or will they decide its not safe at all because we have a need for them ?
i think the later .. the other thing with wa tourism is we are too dam expensive and service is piss poor very often .we are not the only place that is great to visit ,,,,,, but we sure are dam exxy ,

There are now hundreds of tagged great whites..... go onto shark smart anytime and see how often they set off an alarm very rare, even leading up to the surfing titles at Marg's when sharks attacked a couple of guys no whites detected from Esperance to Mandurah for months leading up or after. Interestingly I contacted the premier a few weeks ago explaining how the shark smart system was failing when alarms (in Warnbro) would alert and there was no procedures for the couincil to evacuate the beaches. Kelly has reponded back to me and the city now working on their procedures. Too many words with no substance from the government,

Tom,All the sea bed Data
Tom,
All the sea bed Data loggers have been removed due to a cut in funding the research guys needed and are now gather dust in a shed.
The current state ministers think we have enough research!
The transponders that are surgically inserted in to the gut cavity (Labour intensive) only carry a battery life of around 5 years!
So each year the percentage of sharks that are detected by either a data logger for science or a stationary transmitting buoys drops off due to the lack of re-tagging.
So if theres no re-tagging 5 years after the last transponder went in all the listening stations will fall quite!

Well explained and was aware of most of that. What is of concern is the premier keeps harping on about this site and to check, it has little credability and should not be seen as a safeguard.

Does anyone know if Marc Payne will be tagging the sharks he catches before he tows them out to sea? Make sense to. We have tagged sharks down here in Espy that constantly set off the same buoys on a regular basis, alerts get sent out via social media etc

Don't get your knickers in a knot jack, 4 metres down here believe it or not ain't that common. 4 metres is solid 15ft in the old scale.
A 4 metre swell boats would be silly attempting to get out of cow bay at Gracetown where i assume they'll set most of these hooks.

Surfable 4m swells anyway unless you're hitting Bunkers or PP.
No issues with the boats staying at anchor just saying leave the drum lines out and let the kents drown.

Is there a way to trigger the alarms to get all the scared fuckr's out of the water so we can surf in less crowded waves?

Swim out and impale yourself on the hook? Might make a better bait than the salmon they're planning on using too.

Did anyone hear this?
I thought I heard that when they catch a shark on the drum line, the contractor is compelled to tow it 500 metres out to sea and release it.
What a joke, it would take the Shark no time at all to swim back that distance. I would have thought 5 or 10 kms would have been more appropriate

Just found this
Ten SMART drumlines will be deployed evenly across 11.5 kilometres of coastline in the State’s South West, about 500 metres offshore from Hangmans surfbreak north of Gracetown to Ellensbrook in the south.
The final scientific framework of the trial was decided following community consultation.
The trial is expected to run for 15 months, commencing before the end February. The intent of the trial is not to kill sharks, but to catch, tag, relocate and release white sharks one kilometre from shore.
---------------------------------------
So they are set 500 metres offshore and relocated 1km offshore, which means they are only towed 500 metres from where they are caught. I would have thought that is inconsequential in the scheme of things. 5kms or 10kms is reasonable

Gov PR exercise
This whole fiasco is nothing more than a gov PR exercise for them to be seen as doing something whilst claiming it's based on science or in the interests of science. Same as last time it has been set up to fail. 1kg salmon being used as baits to catch GWs of a size that are known to predate mainly on large mammals.
If Marc Payne's contract provided a performance incentive based on the numbers of GWs caught you would see a totally different approach I am sure.
I hear they caught a sole stingray today. Top effort.

I thought that I saw they caught a tiger today, now what’s going to happen if they only catch tigers because they are the most numerous at this time of the year and only get bronzes later on as they are more numerous when the salmon are around.

Are U expecting something different than them catching the most prolific shark at that point in time the most often?
Makes sense to me
