divers charged by white and dunsborough beaches closed by another white
TWO DIVERS escaped unharmed after they were charged, then circled by a white shark less than 4km off Ocean Reef.
The divers were at Three Mile Reef when the 3.5m shark charged them before circling the pair at "close range" for a short time.
The pair took cover under a reef ledge before surfacing about 2pm.
Surf lifesavers and Department of Fisheries have been unable to locate the shark, but have warned people in the area remain cautious.
Meanwhile, surf lifesavers evacuated beaches at Dunsborough after a 3.5m shark was sighted off Eagle Bay this afternoon.
The beast was spotted by an aerial helicopter patrol about 50m offshore at 2pm and beachgoers were immediately cleared from the water.
Surf Life Saving WA spokesman Matt du Plessis said the species of the shark seen in Dunsborough was unclear.
``We closed the beach as a precaution,'' Mr du Plessis said.
He said a smaller hammerhead shark, about 1.5m long, was also sighted from the air today, along with up to 100 dolphins.
The sharks was spotted by Surf Life Saving WA's new South West helicopter service, which started partrolling this weekend.
The chopper provides provide seven-day-a-week aerial surveillance between Bunbury and Margaret River, with crews patrolling the coast to keep watch for distressed swimmers, rip currents, sharks and marine life and other medical emergencies.
It comes after SLSWA was allocated extra State Government funding to expand services in the South West after three fatal shark attacks in WA in recent months.
Anyone that sights are shark should report it to the Water Police on 9442 8600.

Has the "BEAST" done anything to whip up another media frenzy, 3 meters seems to be this years magic number to strike fear into the heart of the population ever since the cottosloe guy was suspected to be taken by a 3 meter white. seems every single shark sighting reported by the media is conveniantly in the three meter range this year.

its gotta get you wondering though
i mean the last sighting in duinsborough was 5 metre and now a three! then there was a five metre in mangles bay last week and another in ocean reef this week so how many of these sharks are out there and close to our shores! i would love to be able to see how many are out there and where!

Certainly no shortage at the moment. Gotta admit the ocean reef one is a bit concerning for me at the moment. majority of my most common dive sites visited are within a mile to two south of the three mile reef, probably clock up 80 dives a year at those ones. Have always wondered at some point in time a white has to have strolled through any of those marks, just hope it happens when i'm not diving them.

Iron Man in Busso.
The Iron man is on in Busselton today and they've put on extra aerial surveilance for the swim around the jetty not because of the sharks so claims Ray McMillan of the Chamber of Commerce but because of the large number of people competing. He has received a report that says there is no more sharks hanging around the area than normal and don't pose a greater risk. I'd love to get a look at that report because anti-dotally there's more sharks and they're coming in closer to shore. Me thinks there's more commerce speak here than common sense.

I think you will find that privileged is the correct spelling.
Hyphens though, no one knows how to use those any more. You use them when the words you link together form a concept that isn't clear through the use of the same words separately.
You wouldn't say red child, or head child, but you would say red-headed child. Everyone a little more clear on hyphens?
Now that I have done that though, I wonder that, as step-child is to step child (no hyphen), whether both stepchild and redheaded, (no space and no hyphen) are also both equally permissable.
Anyway, back to cleaning my dive gear, and more crayfish.

A local " fisherman " reported seeing about 30 sharks, in a school, down Dunsborough way a couple of weeks ago.
The fact it was a fisho, is a worry in itself. The media have a hell of a lot of people fooled.
For all you folk unfamiliar with Geographe Bay, just recently there has been the whale migration along with an unusual number of dolphins schooling up.
I have fished/dived the area for years and could count on one hand the amount of sharks sighted, not attached to a line. Total media beat-up.
And i am happy to report none of those actually spotted, were wearing women's accessories.

sea rescue
we were at the same location on saturday , just setting our anchor and gearing up for our first dive when the the guys in the article made a call to the local sea recue on 27meg about the W pointer , the sea rescue response was' Okay thanks for that' and nothing further said over the air , we assessed where the guys had made the call from and the location and thought it was too close , we had another dive boat 200 mts Nwest of us with divers on the surface and a second rig about 250 mts to the southwest, we up anchored and cruised over to the rig Nwest of us and told them what we had heard but it wasnt them an they werent concerned so off for their dive they went , meanwhile the second rig to our Swest charged over and informed myself and the other rig what had happened and that there was a GW around . we stayed in the area for 15 minutes watching the divers on the bottom and no show from the GW , there where two other dive boats to our north 300 mts , it would be interesting to know tha the GW was buzzing the first guys but didnt bother to come over the the second rig which had two bottom divers and a surface free diver, we moved then further south and had our dive , but at no time heard any cautions from the sea rescue group about what was in the area
