Dhuie jig

Got my first dhuie on a jig last weekend, even if it was undersize. Caught on pink/white 80 gram y2 jig. I think I needed a 120g as we were in 40m and the current was a bit quick for the 80. Before I go and grab a couple of 120's, what's everyone fav dhuie jig and colour for that depth. Bitten by the jig bug now.

105g Lamble Bait Haoli King in gold colour
and 100g Zetz Slow Blatt S in orange are a couple of my favs.
Can usually fish this weight in 40m comfortably if you put your motor just in gear (reverse) and hover over likely spots.

Seafloor Control - either Reactors or Spunkys
Ima Ro - pinkies also love these in the pink/pearl colour
Shout Lighten
Xesta afterburner - had good success on the back/red colour

I will usually tie a gold/orange coloured jig on first as ive found that colour to work well (cape nat area) but colours will often depend on the location you are fishing so variety certianly helps.
As for weight go as light as possible for demersals so you get the longest possible drop/flutter. 120g will cover most situations but you can go lighter with the more slender jigs (Ima Ro's and Shout lightens) as they dart more so than flutter.
Hope that gives you an idea of whats out there if you are just starting out.

evergreen caprice gold/orange
evergreen caprice gold/orange (colour cp03.aiming to mimic a sgt baker.out fishes everyone else every trip. was in 100m on weekend and the 100g was no problem, weather was amazing though.

My go to Jia the SFC rector
My go to Jia the SFC rector in orange glow stripe pattern have caught numerous species from pinkies dhuies Blackass. To coral trout coronation trout spangos and Mackies have been using SFC for the last say 18months before Perth shops were stocking them and now have a whole range off SFC jigs from rectors scout gawky spunky love them all to be honest
but if I didn't have them is recommend the already mentioned xesta slow emotion awesome jig

Picked up lots of Shimano jigs like that. I am trying , I really am. Had a really good PM from Uluabuster, seems I'm not doing too much wrong, just can't crack it. Case in point, 2 days ago I put a brand new Shimano butterfly flat-fall down through a school of baitfish which looked to have mackerel circling --all I got was a set of mackerel teeth marks and an assist nearly bitten through. I have lots of jigs with marks like that, never seem to hook up. I did catch a spaniard yesterday on that same Butterfly--all of 75cm long. Yesterday I jigged my heart out, only fish of any note I caught were a nice pinky and a cobia, both on two snooded circle hooks carrying a mulie and a running sinker. So far I have caught various trevally species, small-medium sambos, a big slimy, small coronation trout, various minor northern reef species. SP's do better with a better hook-up rate, IMO, but I'll keep trying.

Bottom assist
Got a mate who swears by using a bottom assist to get better hook-ups, just don't keep it on the bottom for too long or you'll catch the bottom. The beauty of this is the bottom assist can be straight to a hook so the bite off chance decreases.

Yes, I'm trying that.
Have put trebles on the bottom of those which will be targetting mackerel. Trouble with a top assist hook that it's nowhere near the bite zone during the drop. OK for big mouthed things that engulf,not much good for sharp-toothd pelagics. Only spaniard I ever hooked on the drop was hooked in the top of his head, back a bit, I reckon it just donged him on the way down.

I would have thought that putting a treble on the botom eye of a jig would change its action quite a bit?
Maybe experiment with a single hook?
Decoy also sell pre-made assists that are wire instead of kevlar which would stop the bite-offs but the only problem with them is if you hook a shark theres less chance of busting it off.

Agreed - I think a single on the bottom would be worth a shot.
Also, don't know if it's just me or not, but I started catching fish on both jigs and plastics once I went with someone who had caught fish on jigs and plastics. Maybe it was just timing, maybe it was the subtle techniques I picked up from him or maybe it just helped me persist, but whatever it was it made me start catching fish.

Persistence
I think that when it comes to learning jigging techniques persistence is the key.
Ill ususally change jig (style and/or colour) after about 15-20mins if im not catching fish but can see fish on the sounder. Keep changing the way your working the jig until you find what the fish are taking on the day. Ive had days where dhus wont take a slow fluttering jig but will smash a small baitfish profile jig (ima ro-like) darting all over the place.
Just leave the bait in the freezer at home that way you have no choice but to keep at it!

I would love to use jigging as another dimention to baitfishing and it looks like it will be starting with a trip to the Maldives in April. I have been told No bait :)

Hook sizes
For demersals i'll use either decoy cutlass or pike in 2/0 3/0 depending on the jig im using.
I dont know if there is a certian hook size based on jig size but ill use a hook that doesnt get stuck on the jig. Its a bit hard to explain but if the hook is too big then the hook bend can wrap around the jig.
There are heaps of assist hooks on the market, decoy are just my preference when making my own. There is a sticky post on here explaining how to tie assist hooks if you havent done it before.
Jigging sports australia sell pre-made assists which are awesome aswell.

Caught a mackerel since my last post.
Shimano Butterfly flat fall, which is bottom rigged. Shallow water hoping for a jew. It was all of 75cm long
, but hey, they are getting bigger

i saw in the ocean side post that they are selling the Vexed Dhu drops, by far the most productive dhuie jig Ive used. Orange colour is best in the 130-160gm I literally have about 50 of these jigs.
My Leeman post in reports holding the dhus which came from these exact jigs in orange.

Caught my first jew on jig the other day, 75cm, on a Shimano Flat Fall Butterfly, lumo green/silver, 100g. Caught second and third as well, but sharks got most of them.
