DF70 Suzuki Questions

Hello all. I have asked this question to a couple of members on here but now will put it out to the wider audience to see if anyone has had personal experience with this. I'm still doing my home work and want to get it right. I want to put a DF70 on the rear of my 4.75m Quintrex Bayhunter project boat. The weight of this is 155kg compared to the DF60 of 104kg. I have been told it's possible to put the 70 on but want to make absolutely sure. Are there any Gurus who can steer me in the right direction. Cheers Andy

What year is the tub? I've got a 2006 480 Quintrex with the 70 Suzuki on the back, it's a great match, I've even seen a 480 Quintrex with a 90hp Suzuki on the back, don't know if that was within the boats range or not tho. If your worried about the extra weight then just go the 60hp, should still have enough power, might just bog down a bit with 3 people anda  big esky full of ice and fish on board

It's a millenium hull Paul. I couldn't see the 480 being that much of a differance in hull size? Cheers for the feedback.

Nah mate I'd think that they are pretty much the same size, just different name for the different year/model. Probly find there's no difference between the hull and transom really

Hey Andy,

What year is the hull? Also, what is the Max HP on the build plate?

Reason I ask is because I'm pretty sure mines a 97 and rated to 60HP and only has a 40 on it... If yours is the same I'm sure we could organise something where we can take mine for a spin so you can see how it goes with a 40... That may help you decide wether or not you need the 70 over the 60... Just seems a big big jump in weight for 10hp

 Steve,

The build plate says 75HP but I can't see a year of manufacture. So don't know if that's for a 2 stroke motor weight. One dealer I spoke to reckons the older 60 2 strokes weigh around the same as the new DF's. But would still like more feed back.

Different hulls but I'm also

Tue, 2013-03-26 17:45

Different hulls but I'm also looking at upgrading my motor. Currently have a 1993 70hp Johnson which weighs 108kg my delima is I'm putting it on a older hull and I can't find anything regarding recommended hp or motor weight for the hull.  It is slightly underpowered if anything but I've alway been wary of putting extra weight at the rear when loading and I tend to balance any weight forward where possible.  My problem is all motors I've looked at are heavier and I'm having trouble deciding if the extra weight on the rear is going to be a problem - personally I'd go the suzi 90hp for my hull as it could do with a little extra grunt and the 90 is the same weight as the 70 (which I imagine is the same motor but detuned).  I just want better fuel econ than the old 93 johnno which will give me better range for the same amount of fuel onboard.

yep realise this is probably of no help at all.....

Actually it is Paul. I didn't realise the 70 and 90 were the same weight. So basically it's the same size as the 90 I already have on my other boat. I'm think I'm leaning toward the 60 now, as I want to be able to handle this boat a bit easier on the beach.

Engine weight/ hp

Tue, 2013-03-26 18:18

I'll chime i'n , while I have no experience with that particular hull I am in a similar situation , I'm looking to repower my boat with a Suzuki 110/140 ( same family / weight ) and was concerned with the extra weight over my current Honda bf 50 ( very under powered ) . I have a 5m Ali rib style centre console and while deciding on what engine to buy decided to upgrade the fuel tank first ( was sick of plastic 25l sliding all over the deck !!!) So I built myself an Ali tank to fit down the back talking up all the available space I could squeeze in . It ended up holding 145 L and doing rough maths weighed an extra 80 kg on top off what I normally carry , while it doesn't sound like much I was a little concerned as the boat doesn't weigh much and was a bit short on power . Well the first test ride blew all those concerns away , it rides much better , lost no top end speed or stability at rest ie leaning side to side or stern heavy . So I would say go for it fit the biggest you can in that engine class and you'll love it !!!
