No man!!!!

Thats not real at all. As a scientist/anatomist there is no way both eyes can grow forward, meet and join as one. The nerve supply to each eye is complex and served by both sides off the brain, Left visiul fiels R brain and visa versa.

Fot this to happen way to many things have to go wrong, and then right to cause this. Just not possible.

*cough* The link does say it

*cough*

The link does say it was an shark foetus, not a free swimming one. So had an extreme defect. It would die pretty quick (whether inside or outside the womb)

Not even extreme will do that Matt

Look at any basic embroyology book and you will see that all creatures start with a 2 part folding process. A failure in this process in humans creates Spina bifida and Anenchephaly (the brain is open - cant survive that). Ie didnt meet properly at the end of the folding

Early on in the process the eyes form, and they cant migrate forward because they arise in 2 different sides. A flounders eye is weird enough as it migrates around, but to join and form one eye?? NAH.

The eyes didnt migrate, there

Wed, 2011-10-19 12:06

The eyes didnt migrate, there were developmental problems with the hox genes as they were "placing" the eyes which resulted in them being placed along the midline as opposed to left/right as is common with, well, nearly all animals. So instead of two eyes forming, then moving and merging (which i'll agree is just a little absurd), the hox genes not working properly placed a single eye on the centreline that then grew. Theres been several cases of cyclopia observed in several animals so obviously it happens ;)

Also see Holoprosencephaly which affects the facial features due to a similar abnormality.

Know all this stuff about Hox and homeobox etc

Wed, 2011-10-19 12:39

Still think its fake for sure.

Neels

PS

In all cases craniocephly you get other abnormalities like mouth and nose, which also rely on Hox genes to for. This shark looks fairly normal apart from the eye.

Dont want to go to techno with prosencephaly, mesenchephaly etc because it is complicated +++. Hence the high Miscarriage rate in humans compared with other less developed brain creatures.

If channel 9 is saying its real then we know it has to be fake.  I'm curious as to why the guy seems to be holding his hand over where the eye would normally be?? looks a bit rubbery too!!

as crasny said if its a homeobox defect it would afect the nose and brain aswell; it doesnt seem to have any nose but? still the eye itself looks too 'perfect', like a human eye. do a quick google images search on shark eyes and you wont find anything this perfect.

Definitely affected the nose

Thu, 2011-10-20 12:53

Definitely affected the nose (the side shot shows it well). Probably the brain too. The eye does look strange. Though, keep in mind, its a foetus, not a juvenile, a genetic abnormality could still mean a properly formed eye (as opposed to malformed as well as malpositioned). The eye would be more exposed than most sharks (and is being held open too), so you wouldnt expect it to look like a normal sharks eye as it sits in a normal sharks head. In most sharks, they eyes are inset a fair bit (as per a lot of animals), so you would have to compared it to an eye removed from the shark. Found a pic of a shark eye here (a bit discoloured though).

Although the eye does look rather fake, the specific mutation is not impossible and has been observed before in different species, so its something that can happen.
