Croc at Hearsons
Submitted by Ron Ashcroft on Wed, 2008-11-12 19:58
Apparently there was a 3 mtr croc sighted at Hearsons down the north end around the mangroves. Be carefull gathering bait around Airport and Cowrie.Still gonna go fish the last of the high and the low tommorrow at Airport. The water might be getting a bit too cold with all the cold weather we've been having.Hottest its been is around 32 ish (sorry you southerners)

I heard that as well
I heard about the croc yesterday too Ron, it was only a matter of time. They've been spotted around Dampier/Pt Samson on a semi-regular bases now for the last couple of years.

Croc
I find it hard to believe but on the way to work checked out the Cove to see if a warning sign was up and it was. Somebody is taking it serious.

ATM
At least one in the Ashburton at the moment.
Just a fact of life that crocs are moving south. Since hunting them has been banned, their numbers have steadily built. There is only x amount of territory available for upcoming males and seeing as big resident males wont tolerate other males in their 'patch' these displaced ones need to find their own territory OR face being killed by the resident male.
One thing I learnt living in the Kimberley, you only see a very small percentage of those that are actually living there.

Word is that they were here
Word is that they were here in the early days and got shot out quickly, taking a long time for them to return. As John pointed out the population is on the increase and the Beta males are getting pushed down in search of new territory. Apparently they are unable to naturalise here cos we don't have the neither the vegetation nor the humidity for nesting. Haven't seen one yet but am hoping my first encounter is not too close.
