Crayfish'n On Full Moon
Submitted by Big Kev on Tue, 2008-11-11 10:59
Does anyone know if the Full Moon affects Crayfish feeding habits as its a Full Moon on the 13th and opening day is 15th. I heard that Crayfish wont feed on a Full Moon, just wondering what you guys think?
Cheers Kev.

Apparently pros
told fisheries they don't catch on a full moon, so fisheries has told them they can't fish for crays, how true I don't know, but the old pros will tell they don't catch on full moon.

The reason why crays wont
The reason why crays wont move on a full moon is due to the extra light. They are more prone to predation. Our catch rates drop huge over a full moon because the crays wont walk.

Full Moon
Crays don't stray far from the reef on a full moon due to the extra light making them more visible and vulnerable. They will still enter a pot if its dropped hard up against the edges they're under.Even if your pot is 10 feet from the reef its too far, they won't enter it,it has to be hard up to it.
Used to be the opposite when I was shark fishing,we would set across hard/heavy bottom on the "dark"of the moon because if you set on weedy/sandy bottom the sea lice eat everything. All you finish up with are "hand bags",all skin and bones rattling inside it,not an ounce of flesh left.
I may be wrong but I think the opening date is the 1st of December, moved back to coincide with the pro's.

went for a dive
went for a dive today to check the progress, crays have molted and are still a lil soft, If theres swell in the first to days it would definatly be worth fishing straight away, just like the last 2 yrs we have caught crays opening day no worries.

Down at melros most people
Down at melros most people pull there pots back in the week or so around the full moon .Quantity of crays over the full moon is always down imo.Alot more crays get eaten by ockys over the full moon the theiving buggers.

Fullmoon!
Yeh they tuck themselves in on the Full. Divers have more of a chance but they still back right up into hidy holes. The lead up to the full can be good for crays but on and up to 4 days after not so!

Soaking pots
Easiest way to wet pots is to stick the under the sprinkler while watering your lawn and cover with wet bag/hessian when sprinkler is off.Kill 2 birds with one stone
