Cost of boat hire?
Submitted by black gen on Mon, 2019-01-07 18:40
Just having a discussion about pros and cons of having a boat verse hiring a big one between a few blokes once or twice a year when heading north
we all currently own boats and have all our marks but as life gets busier the boat doesn’t get used anywhere near as much as yesteryear
curiosity has me thinking that it could perhaps be better value between a few boys for the use we get out of the boats currently
does anyone know the cost to hire one for a week or two from murchison or exmouth boat hire
cheers

Better to be looking at it than for it!
If you can afford it that is.

I just hired a boat from
I just hired a boat from Paul at Murchison boat hire. 6.5 metre plate boat that had all the gear on it for $600 for 4 days. (Current summer special)
Paul even dropped it the turnoff after Northampton for me. I’ve got a boat but have not used it for awhile and didn’t have time to sort things out so made the call to hire.
Was pleased how the boat performed in Monkey Mia, electrics were reasonable. Probably saved me around $150 not having to tow my boat from Perth as well.

Me and a couple mates done it
Me and a couple mates done it around 15 years ago with the Exmouth boat hire for a week. It was pretty good week. Still had to tow a trailer up to carry the beer and fishing gear. Electrics were very basic back then black and white lowerancesounder and furuno gps tracker. Still a great week and plenty of fish caught.
Now that all I’ve got is a dingy and pretty much in the position as you I was just talking about the same thing to my mates. Either hiring a boat or just doing charters now. I roughly figure without putting to much thought into it just to maintain a boat to do the up the north trip would be around $4k a year. There is one good charter already without having a $40,000 asset in your drive way. What you are suggesting is pretty much what I am going to be doing from now on.

Exmouth boat hire is good
We hired a plate ally boat from Exmouth boat hire and it was a good experience. You canget a 6m - 7m boat that will take you just about anywhere from about $1,200 - $2,200/week depending on the time of year. We've towed a boat to Onslow a couple of times and it was much better not having to woryy about that. Going mid-year and whilst a mate wants to tow his boat up there I'll be suggesting we just hire again.

I hired the west coast boat
I hired the west coast boat hire boat for a trip last year and as I don’t use a boat a lot and between 5 of us it was pretty cheap really. For 10 days the entire trip cost us about $1500 each which is pretty good really.
always looking for a new challenge!!

Owning and using a caravan,
Owning and using a caravan, we looked into the idea of a week's hire. If there were a few interested parties then it would surely work.

Note that use of (and towing
Note that use of (and towing of) the hire boats is technically limited to 5 miles from land and only day light hours.
Could be a deal breaker depending on where your spots are.

The largest one can go 10
The largest one can go 10 nautical miles offshore but you're right with the rest of the boats. 5 miles still gives you lots of options in Exmouth. Can't comment on Coral Bay though.

Boat Hire
Big Boats, Sports cars and women are all cheaper to hire than to buy.. Lol
Did a little financial exercise with a mate of mine a few weeks ago. He has a bigger boat that he planned on taking up north (broome area) once every couple of years for an extended fishing trip.
For the cost of owning his boat he could have paid for both of us to go on a two week trip, on Tru North, every year.
He has had some great times on that boat but he never did get it north.
Sometimes when the water is quiet, you can hear the fish laughing at you !

All good points, no one is
All good points, no one is wrong....BUT, if im going deep or somewhere ive never been i wanna know what capabilities the boat im driving has and trust it completely.
If you are coast bouncing maybe no probs otherwise I'll tow my girl up everytime.
P.S that goes for the trailer too.

Fair call Straith. We took
Fair call Straith. We took the hire boat to Peak Island and had a bit of an engine ssue that stressed us out but all fine in the end. Couldn't agree more regarding the trailer and I'll only use other people's if I know they are well maintained.

Same. We had a hire boat,
Same. We had a hire boat, which had engine problems. Got us back to land ok but could not use for the remainder of our booking. They let us use a bigger boat for a couple of days and the little tinny for a day.
