heading down to coral bay from 25th May till about the 1st June. Just wondering how or if you guys wash your motors out? Been told by coral bay we aren't allowed to do it? Also I know the weather has been shit lately there ( windy ) I'm only bringing a 460 renegade do you think that will be sufficient? I will be wanting to get out wide enough to get some good fish? any tips? Cheers!

Yeh you can't wash your
Yeh you can't wash your motors out, artesian water only and drinking water only.
You can stay in close and get some squid/spanglies. One of my best Red spots is only 5km from entrance,, so you don't need to go far. Pulled up 3 over 10kg last year.

Def do not wash it at
Def do not wash it at C/Bay...water will do more damage than good..We go two weeks every year- only ever do it once when u return home as no damage will be done in these time frames...However when u get home, be sure to run it for a good 15 mins to allow the thermostat to get to temp and open for a good clean. good luck, we r up there June 7th for a cpl weeks.

We just got back and had a 3.8m inflatable. Got a mangrove jack, gold spot and 4 Kuta just the other side of the reef. Plenty of options available for us so with a bigger boat you should have no dramas.

Super big tides and blowy in
Super big tides and blowy in the morning though we got a moderate south easterly after lunch a few days and a glass out on another. I haven't been there for 12 years so I am not sure what 'great' weather is though I thought it was pretty good. Most people launching mid morning and heading out at lunch and fishing into the late afternoon.

We generally go around
We generally go around July/August. Generally its good during this period and normally a few days of glass..But you miss the pelagics which are around autumn. Plus its good to get away from the cold/wet city.

False passage
can anyone give me some extra info of when it’s safe to go out and back in south passage? I believe 2 metre swell would be a no go but not to sure about tides etc any info would much appreciated as I will be heading up in a couple of weeks. Cheers

Unless you know what you’re
Unless you know what you’re looking at with false passage, don’t bother.
as people have said 2m swell is a good guide. Maybe 2.5m, but only on high incoming tides. The Second the tides head out the swell starts to peak. North passage is best in high swell. I’ve had a few close calls through southern passage, you have to know how to pick the swell and make sure you’re not off course, which at times you can appear to be when you’re not. Stay north and don’t cut the corner in a bigger swell than 2m.

Yeah I’ve been out there
Yeah I’ve been out there before in a tinnie a few years back.. can’t remember what the conditions were but I sat there watching a bit and just thought fuck it and started motoring. Got half way through it and shit myself but By then I had to get through it. Taking a 16 footer up this time so il feel a bit safer. Il only do it if swell is down and will have a proper look. Thanks for the info. Il maybe have a chat to a few ppl when up there and find out what a good day will be to give it a crack

2 metre swell is a good
2 metre swell is a good guide but best is to watch it for a few minutes before going through.
You can sit inside safety and watch it to see if any wave break in the passage.
When in doubt.....don't go. North Passage might be longer but worth it if the conditions aren't good.

It can have more to do with
It can have more to do with the tide and conditions than the swell sometimes. Had a wave close out on us last year on the way in when the swell was well less than 2m. So always got to keep eye out for sets especially if the tide is going out. It is actually fairly deep in the passage so waves stand right up befoe they break. The seas are always really messy just behind the passage for half mile or so when tide is running which in a smaller boat if the wind is up can be just as much of a issue. Like they others have said the best bet is to go have a look, wait for a couple of sets, if not sure for any reason just go north.
