You'll find the 85g Spanyid

Sun, 2015-12-06 14:57

You'll find the 85g Spanyid metals for around $10 at BigW & Kmart. Sometimes they'll be on special too, 30% off etc.

Cast out, sink to the bottom then crank up.

If it is snaggy, take the hooks off and count how long it takes to hit the bottom.

Fish as light as possible so you don't tire yourself out.

Hey Callum,As you say Rob's

Hey Callum,

As you say Rob's gonna have the best advice on this topic in terms of spots and species and whilst Ive done a few trips up there over the past 18 months - your own knowledge is probably greater than mine.

having just got back from an electric little trip to quobba I had been considering doing as you say and targetting pelagics from Kalbarri after xmas. I put up a few notes on the LB page regarding lures and havent collated the photos for a report yet, but here are some initial thoughts on Kalbarri myself for the upcoming summer/autumn season.

The quobba candy i procured from big john was dynamite for macks up north and no reason why it wouldnt also be at kalbarri. It casts as well as any metal lure, hooks were super strong, it drew hits in the quiet times from macks (both sharks and spanish as well as many cobia) and most importantly it hunkered down in the water when casting from an elevated position, i.e. didnt launch out the water. Whilt the terrain and prolificacy of pelagics at Kalbarri is not quite what it is further noth, you need a lure in the water to be able to apply some action and get the fish going - the bristle jig heads can be jigged, spun flat out (they seem to sit at 0.5 - 1m depth depending on crank speed and even if really wound fast from high up they only skim the surface with a great bubble trail). Metals did none of that for us. I had bearely any attention on spanyids etc up to 85g and found that they hit the surface on retrieve all too easy.

Diving/bibbed hardbodies....again if casting from an elevated perch (of which there are a good many at Kalbarri, a diver can be launched a good distance out and you will find that with the bib it will vibrate and maintain the action all the way back. Rapala do some great colours in the XXXRC and SXR14 including UV colours for the overcast days. They also get down when the fish are more 'shy'.

big stickbaits - I find these most effective when you can get down close to the water. Higher up and the angle of retrieve impacts the action (IMO), I found they were largely useless from 8m + high up. Nice walk the dog wobble and or twitch/pause worked when closee to water level.

My personal set up is a 5000 HG shimano (stella) and 9,6 NS blackhole rod - 20-80g cast rating - it has heaps of power. If sharks are a problem (far moreso north than they are at Kalbarri - funnily enough I had this conversation with rob the other day) then I just step up to a 5000H Daiwa and then skull drag fish in faster. Its an outfit that casts a long way, is super light and enough stoping power for most occassions.

10ft sensor surf might be a universal rod option and any reliable high speed reel should do the job. 40lb braid - high quality, low diameter will cast further. give some thought to czpacity. If you can launch a lure 80m+ and hook up to a good spanish or tuna you will easily lose a 100m or more on its first run so you are gonna want a bit of capacity up your sleeve.

The few cliff spots ive tried are pretty sandy bottomed so plastics are an option.

hope some of the above is of some use.

Yeah, no probs. The bibbed

Sun, 2015-12-06 16:16

Yeah, no probs. The bibbed stradas in TW are pretty good as well. can pick them up cheap as chips sometimes ($5 from the Morley store about a month ago).

oh yeah and good fluoro leader as well. Probably 5 times as many hook ups with fluoro by comparison to wire - again only personal experience. I havent suffered too badly with bite offs........... from fish at least!
