Catching crays on hooks
Submitted by Sunburntfeet on Wed, 2013-10-23 21:25
Heard a story at work today, catching crays on hooks while fishin for KGs in deep water. Reputable bloke and I want to believe him, but I'm a sceptic at heart. Any one ever pulled up a jumbo on a hook? I want to believe :)

My neighbour catches crays
My neighbour catches crays fishing from a northern suburbs beach every year. Certain weather conditions and a certain technique = crays! sorry but not giving out any more info, been sworn to secrecy!

Certainly not vegetarian.
Certainly not vegetarian. I've even seen them eat occy legs when kept in a tank. Sure didn't think that would happen.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Reds arn't but northern
I always thought painted were vego's also.
I've heard its not that uncommon and by the feedback it sounds like it happens a fair bit.

Painteds eat mainly coral
Painteds eat mainly coral but will chew on fish too. They dont go into pots though as apparently they cant get their feelers back far to allow entry

Yep got one fishing for
Yep got one fishing for snapper in June this year out of Hillarys...nice big male too.....thought it was an occy at first with the surging on the line, and the long legs....lucky the skipper was quick with the net. He wasn't surprised as he has bagged a few that way, so prob not that uncommon.

Not by hook
Not 100% sure , but you cant catch them with a hook. You can use your hands , loop or pots .
On a side note i have seen fisheries bust people for catching crabs in prawn nets from the bridge in Freo. Have to use a wire scoop for them .
So if you have a cray on your boat, dont have pots out or diving gear on board you could have a problem explaining how you caught it. Just saying , not that i agree with alot of these rules, but it pays to read the regulations properly .
Chrees Grant. P:s have caught a few small ones on baits at mindaries , but chucked them back .

I suppose
I suppose its up to inerpretation of the regulations.
From Fisheries = Divers may only catch rock lobster by hand, or by a hand-held snare or blunt crook. Spears, nets and similar devices that can damage rock lobster are illegal. Diving for rock lobster is now permitted at the Abrolhos Islands.
Like i said , only saying and not having a go at anyone .

release
okay so you release it into the water with one hand and grab it with your other hand...... technically nothing illegal there, enjoy your dinner

I'm pretty sure you're not
I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to keep a cray that is accidently caught by fishing hooks as inevitably it will have pierced the cray
