This fish was speared just off seal rock in about 4m of water, about 35-40cm in length, i didnt want it to go to waste so i cooked it up and it made for a decent feed.

dont take offence
but please dont spear anything if you dont know what it is...you did eat it and thats ok but it could have turned out it was poisonous or just realy crap eating and if you found this out before cooking it you would have dumped it, not having a go
just trying to enlighten you

fishy dont worry i dont take
fishy dont worry i dont take offence, im more than aware of the fact. The only reason i speared it is that it truely thought it was a big black bream having speared one a few minutes earlier and there was only about a few meters vis so i got quite a surprise when i surfaced

I really found nothing wrong
I really found nothing wrong with this fish, sure it was a bit "fishy" but that aside it was really moist and held together well, i bled it straight away and i filleted it a skinned it, eggwash, flour cornflour and breadcrum mix with s and p and a bit of chicken salt and shallow fried, it went down a treat. i think there's too much outside influence on fish, if someone tells you it will taste like shit you will really go into a taste test on the defensive and be overly fussy, i think eating this fish with an open mind was a godsend for me as i can now appreciate it whereas not many others can, more for me.

Good on ya mate. Positive attitude to an age old argument.
For me fishing has always been about doing my own thing and not being one of the sheep.
But by the same token, a little research on what fish you are likely to encounter in the area you are going to fish and their edibility, can and will be a positive step in ensuring no seious stomach ailments after said delicious fare.
When I moved to WA eons ago I bought 2 books on fish to be found in western australian waters. I later bought a second copy of one of these books and place it right where a man does most of his serious thinking - beside the dunny!
yep!
and each time I had a wasteful moment I used it to advantage by studying each species of fish, their habitats, their food prefs, their breeding cycles and their edible qualities.
Waste Not Want Not - time wise as well !

dont be discouraged champ, i
dont be discouraged champ, i think youll find a big % of the people on this site only eat fish worth more a kg than most of us earn in an hour.
i caught a monster one of them out back of rotto a few months back and let it go, looked it up and was rated as "ok" as stated by till, would have kept and tried it just for a personal referance if nothing else.
Here we go again.

I was in coles the other day
I was in coles the other day and the two fresh fish fillets they had were sambo and sweetlip!
We keep a few two (of three) star fish when they're clearly gonners and give them away as neighbour fish and most people are very happy with them. Its very easy to get spoilt and just eat the three star stuff yourself though.
I still love fresh hezzas and skippy sashimiu myself ;)

I've eaten them quite a bit.
I've eaten them quite a bit. Used to spear them every weekend when our family was going through a tough patch. We lived off crays and fish and salad for 6 months or so.
They tasted fine. Still never got over the crays.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

too true
we do get a little fussy on what we eat-last year my brother and I did a trip to False/steep, stayed a bit longer and run out of tucker. Cooked up a long tom, it was SUPERB.
So we ate a few over the next few days til I filleted one and saw worm crawling out of the flesh everywhere. After that we got some threadfin and tailor luckily.
Only a few days back I got some cobia out of the freezer, caught and frozen in Coral Bay in April. Was going to give it to the dogs until I cooked a small piece up with our red emp-it was just as good, firm and tasty. A bonus is they are quicker easier and neater to fillet than any reef fish!

It's surprising
A lot of fish we all catch are regarded as crap when in actual fact if you can cook properly you might get a surprise at how good they are. I'm sure some less fortunate kid on the other side of the Indian Ocean would love to be chowing down on a Sweetlip right now.

from a guy that cooks for a living
hi there just like to add,
1) most fish regarded as low table quality, will taste better fresh( caught, chilled then filleted, not frozen), than defrosted top table fillets( except maybe dhuie and coral trout :))
2) different fish have different taste and textures, so must cook accordingly. dont throw all fish into the same basket. ie, in my younger years on my first salmon trip, after catching 1, the bloke next to me said its not worth eating. so for years i have not tried to eat one. then later on i was invited on a fishing trip down south with some other(older) people i met. they showed me how they smoked the salmon with brown sugar, and it was awesome.
always remember fresh is best. so take only what you can eat.
happy fishing

Totally agree on the aussie
Totally agree on the aussie salmon.Tastes good when fresh and smoked. Also cut the bloody meat off.
My grandmother who spent her last days in hedland also loved longtom. I took one home and just couldnt bring myself to cook it up after cleaning it.
One fish that I find revolting that southerners quite like is sweep. Kept one after a trip out of hopey and was dry reaching while gutting and filleting. Once again couldnt bring myself to eat and gave it to the neighbour who loved it.
I also dont see what the big deal is about eating dhuie either.I dont rate them at all. Id have a blackarse over a dhuie anyday.

Thanks for all the responses
Thanks for all the responses guys this site is great, so i might just throw out another question.
Aside from all the well known fish and whatnot, ive been finding it hard to identify alot of the fish i see diving around reef and rock groins in geraldton, i have 3 books for species identification and theres also the fisheries site but there seems to be alot missed out, does anyone know of a website or a book that has the complete downlow on aussie fish eadible or not, sports fish and exotics alike?

Fish ID Books.
G'day mate,
The 2 books I have found to be of most value over the years are:
Sea Fishes of Southern Australia by Barry Hutchins and Roger Swainston.
&
The Marine and Estuarine Fishes of South-western Australia: A Field Guide for Anglers and Divers by Barry Hutchins, Martin Thompson.
Another book that is quite good but does not give a very extensive coverage of subspecies or acurate color photos is:
Australian Fish Guide by Frank Prokop.
This book covers all of Australia and is available (or was last time I looked) in K Mart and most tackle stores.
Myself, I think it is past time that a guide to fish species was incorporated in the Fisheries website for the express purpose of public education.
As for fish edibility, well one mans crap is another mans culinary delight. Each to their own but the catch word is FRESH.
Cheers and Good Fishin'

the books i have are :
>AFN's western australian fish guide (the little waterproof one most people have)
>Gregorys australian fishing 14th edition
