Breaking waves?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if 3 mile out of hillarys actually breaks in water around the 10m mark or even deeper?. If so what swell size and period would i need to watch out for.

What im trying to achieve is to sit out around the 10m to 20m deep water approx 3 mile out of hillarys and hoping not to get caught by a sneaker set. Happy for private pm on where i might search for my first size dhui on me little 4.2m.

i have navionics both on my phone and fishfinder and would not attempt on bigger than 1.5m swell. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Harry

As far as I'm aware it

As far as I'm aware it breaks on 6m swell out from Hillarys. As you get closer to Ocean Reef the chance of breakers increasers (closer to the permanent breakers obviously).

Under 2m swell you will be fine if there isn't much wind. Rough chop is much more likely to catch you out in a small boat on the 3 mile.

Holy Sh*t

6m swell Hutch. That is a bloody big swell for Perth. Or did you mean on the 6m line?

Headed for Rotto once out of Hillaries. Calm day but a solid 3m swell running and it was breaking as far as we could see in both directions on the 10-12m line when the sets came through. As you said 2m is safe providing the wind chop/seas are not up.

Swell period always gets overlooked/underestimated

Always keep an eye on the swell period. A 2m swell at 16+ Seconds would break in water deeper than a 2.8m swell @ 12 seconds. I don't believe in a hard and fast rule with what combo's will break in certain depths (way too many variables.) Just be aware that long period swells have far more energy and will "feel" the ocean floor at deeper depths than shorter period swells. The following link is more relevant to surfing but have a read and you'll get the gist: http://www.surfline.com/surfology/surfology_forecast2.cfm
