Braid or mono?

Hey all as I am getting into my tinnie bottom bouncing, which is best for it? I have a tld15 and am wondering if I line it with 45ld mono or 50-80 braid and 8 foot leader of 80-100ld? Advie is needed! Cheers

 Braid is best for bottom

Braid is best for bottom bouncing because of low stretch you will feel more bites and hook up rate

50lb braid. Mono isn't

Tue, 2013-05-14 09:38

50lb braid. Mono isn't ideally suited for bb because of its stretch, but you're on the money with a long mono/fluoro leader.

The FG knot is very strong

Tue, 2013-05-14 09:56

The FG knot is very strong and thin so it goes through the guides easily. Takes a bit of time and effort to learn it though.

Other options are the PR or bimini twist then GT knot. These are both also pretty complicated.

The albright is easier to tie though and still pretty strong so it's not a bad choice if the other knots are too hard.

 Personal choice what line

Tue, 2013-05-14 11:28

Personal choice what line you use really. I've used mono from day dot and i've caught a fair share of fish in my time. If you're catching big fish believe me you don't need to feel every bite as usualy it's bang! But if you want to be a bit sporty braid is the way to go. Downside is it tangles easy as well so something else to be aware of. Upside you get more metreage on your spool.

 Knot wise Albright is

Tue, 2013-05-14 12:25

Knot wise Albright is alright for bottom bashing. Reason being your line doesn't have to slide through the guide at warp speed and you are not casting.

FG /PR/ Midknot are useful because they slide through the guides with minimum resistance and hence better casting distance.

So if you are bottom bounching, it doesn't matter what knot you use so long the connection is strong.

I prefer bulky knot for jigging because it act as a stopper/indicater so that I wouldn't overwind my leader with the jig flying towards me at high velocity.

i tend to use about 3m leader and a bulky knot for jigging~~~haha~~~

its scary if a jig is shooting up right to the face~~~ >.<

Why a mono leader for bottom bashing!

Tue, 2013-05-14 12:31

I use 80lb braid cause you get way more on the spool and can feel every bite plus it has lower "drag" in deep water but why complicate things by joining braid to heavier mono, then mono your swivel on top of the rig?.  I just make 6ft long rig with sinker at bottom and two baits about 3ft and 5.5 ft from the bottom then a big swivel ?I think its called a paternoster rig the common one used. Just tie the braid to the swivel. whenever ive snaggeg it always breaks where the loop comes off the mono on the rig (where hook is) it  never breaks where the braid joins the swivel at the top. If you go braid, heavy mono, then mono to swivel on rig youve got more weak points and i find braid to mono breaks much easier i dont like doing it I only use it for trolling

 When you're fishing broken

Tue, 2013-05-14 12:54

When you're fishing broken reefy bottom with a braided mainline you need a longer mono leader IMO. I do a bimini in braid to improved Albright with 3m 60lb mono, then swivel to paternoster rig. If something goes wrong with the rig, it's easy to just cut it off at the swivel, re-tie another one on and off you go. If you use a straight through long rig and you need to change it, you have to cut off the bimini and start all over again. The way I do it gives me about 4.5 - 5m of 60lb leader and I haven't had a knot fail yet. Each to their own, but I always use long leaders after I was burned using just a mono rig (no leader) and lost a big suspected dhuie when the braid rubbed on reef and pinged off.

 Dave,The mono leader is more

Tue, 2013-05-14 13:01

 Dave,

The mono leader is more for stretch than anything also abrasive resitance. And as you know making up your Paternosters. As you say for trolling it's a must for that initial strike but I know you can get those shock leaders for that as well.

I guess I figure theres just nothing fancy about reef bashin

Tue, 2013-05-14 13:41

so the rigs I use reflect that. I give me brother shit all the time when we reef bash cos he uses fancy rigs that tend to twist and tangle, expensive owner hooks, expensive swivels the most expensive mono in different sizes, 10kg braid (which really shits me cos when he snags up it snaps easily and he always forgets to bring sinkers so guess who's sinkers he uses! ) - he doesnt catch anymore or anyless fish than me and in the end as we all know your eventually gonna lose all the terminal tackle you own especially when reef fishing

 Yeah nothing fancy Dave for

Tue, 2013-05-14 14:20

Yeah nothing fancy Dave for me either. I use 130lb leader down here and 200lb up north for the Reds. I only have one swivel leader to main line and the rest are just loops for the hooks and sinker.

I've used braid and mono.  I

Tue, 2013-05-14 14:31

I've used braid and mono.  I can tell you, I only use braid now.  stronger, thinner, less stretch, less drag etc etc...  I usually use 1m or so of leader that is heavier than my main line to absorb a bit of the initial hit, and also to provide some abraision resistance against the reef.  I also find it easier to tie knots to hooks etc with mono...

but hey, there's a lot more experienced fisho's than me out there who can give you some great advice.

+1 for braid~~

haha~~~ i just tie a longer leader if i need the shock absorbing feature of mono~~^_^~~

back in my home country,

when doing bottom bouncing, i just tie my main line to a heavy duty swivel, then tie my rig with a leader onto the swivel~~~haha~~~

for 'guest' rods I use mono

Tue, 2013-05-14 21:21

as it means less work for me. For my personal rod, 50lb braid with a 3-4m 60lb  leader, joined

with an albright but with the braid doubled over. Then a 100lb paternoster or drift rig. If drift rig,

I have the sinker above the crimp not below. Owner hooks thanks. Seems to work.
