Bonefish at the Montes?
Submitted by big john on Sat, 2019-03-23 19:41
Just wondering if anyone has come across any bonefish on any of the flats in the Montebello Islands chain?
Interested in flicking a few micro bucktails for them if they're there.

Haven’t come across them or
Haven’t come across them or heard anyone catching them. I was looking at thinking the same thing when I was over there last week though. Biggest problem would probably be the hordes of little pickers that inhale anything little.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

We saw a bonefish when we pulled up to the beach on the north east side of trimouille island. Flicked a smiling jack at it as its all I had and got a follow but it swam off after that.

When I was there a number of
When I was there a number of years ago I had my best fun walking around on low tides flicking 105mm poppers with one big single hook through the sargasum weed beds that grow this time of year . The single hook didnt pick up much weed and you could fish some pretty weedy areas. There is lots of small bait in the weed and lots of preditors in there as well. I caught all sorts of things in less than 2 ft of water. From trout to monster spangos it was the most fun I had there. I also used bucktails in more open sandy country and caught some amazing fish from trout to decent gts spangos and painted sweetlip in sometimes a foot of water mostly if you saw it you caught it. Some rock hopper boots are a must and watch where you park the boat if the tide is going out. There was lots of flats around to fish and most islands you could walk around the edges on low tide. We even caught a few big blue bone on bucktails they absolutely smashed them. The place was amazing and if I went back I would be doing lots of flats walking and walking the edges of islands on low tides. The sight of a big trout hunting down a popper in half a metre of water is amazing. My bucktails were all big but I tied them on super strong light soft plastic jig heads. Green natural bucktail with a few strands of holographic flash of any colour seemed to work best. I think they were berkley nitros of varying weights and sizes up to 7/0. I used 30lb fins and a short 35lb fluro leader . Never saw a bonefish but it didnt seem like the country they like, they are probably there though.

I have caught bones on
I have caught bones on bucktails here in exmouth but not for years. We used to catch them on gamakatsu cobra jig heads and paddletails in 1/0 and 2/0 they were the only jig head that wouldnt bend with bones weird hard mouth. Bones bend hooks . So I used to tie them as bucktails and got a few bones. It was pretty easy actually. After catching a few I havnt had a go since and that was years ago. Much easier than on a fly rod.
