Blue crayfish?
Submitted by Piggy on Mon, 2013-11-04 14:42
Hi guys,
dont know whether this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything in the search.... Has anyone ever seen a blue crayfish and why are they blue compared to the others that are red? The reason why I ask is I was out snorkeling yesterday's and I saw a crayfish that was almost aqua blue... I did catch it and one stage but having my catch bag in one hand it happened to get free..
i was hoping if anyone can tell me any info on the blue ones it would be appreciated because do can't find much on the internet
cheers

Possibly a painted
Possibly a painted crayfish?
They can have some blue colours on them. From what I understand they don't like going into pots so the commercial guys don't bother with them.

Maybe
There is a possibility it was a painted but I doubt it. I use to fish for painted crays up north when I lived there and this one looked exactly like a west rock lobster except a very blue color... This was around the ffb aswell!!

Its a genetic mutation
Apparantly 1 in around 8 million crayfish are born blue. Its a stat i heard once on one of those interecting facts shows - its a bit like albinos seen in other animals but much more rare. Yiou were very lucky to see one, apart from the fact he was 1 in about 8 million, they usually get eaten quickly because they have no camouflage and stand out compared to the other crays. We had bright blue freshwater crays in our aquarium for the kids only problem is they are aggressive and eat all your fish so in the end we just had bright blue crays they were good pets though the kids enjoyed them.
