getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

The bottom pic

Mon, 2011-03-07 15:39

is a blue and the top pic a black.

The photos show a primary distinguishing characteristic of blue marlin  vs. black marlin.  The flap of skin covering the throat and below the gills and the branchiostegal bones supporting it are about half the length of the similar flap of skin and branchiostegals of a black marlin.  In a black marlin this flap of skin would extend back almost as far as the rear edge of the operculum or main gill cover.

Was looking at these pics

Thu, 2011-04-07 19:06

Was looking at these pics again and realised what the main different was. I was thinking the lengths were to do with the curve point on the gill plates. Pointy and close to the pectoral on the black, and slow curve to the front on the blue, but then noticed it was the length of the 'undergills' and its quite obvious the difference between the blue and black, especially when you consider how close it comes to the pectoral.

Also, the black has a 'dimple' on the gill plate, whereas the blue curves more smoothly. Also, I noticed that if i drew a straight line along the bottom of the gill plates, on the black it clearly went above the pectoral, and on the blues, below (i knew they have diff pectoral heights, but the line helps from any photo angle).

Pectoral fins

Thu, 2011-04-07 19:34

I thought the easy way to identify was that the Black has fixed pectoral fins and the Blue can be pushed back....
