Bigger Metro Jewfish Capture numbers?

Has there been a larger number of larger Jewfish captured the past few months in the metro than ever or is it my imagination?

It just people I speak appear to be pulling big fish out of local waters more than ever?

Hard to say

Sat, 2008-06-14 12:39

Hard to say salt, I'm not in Perth, so I guess the guys that are pulling them are in the best position to answer that good question. Certainly, there seems to have been more and bigger Dhui pics posted.

There seems to be alot

Sat, 2008-06-14 13:22

There seems to be alot around at the moment, quite a few people in the rocky offshore seem to be doing well with dhui's, most seem to be coming from deeper water from what I've seen. We don't usually fish less than 90m so I don't know if many people are getting many closer in? There always sems to be more out in the deeper water during the colder months.

Pro ban

Sat, 2008-06-14 14:40

Could it possibly be anything to do with the pro's being banned from metro waters....if it is it would seem it worked (keeping them out).....or maybe not!

To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!

Interesting comment and one

Sat, 2008-06-14 14:20

Interesting comment and one i beleive in stringly as well. There has been a huge increase in large dhues caught over the last 4 to 6 months IMO. A 20kg dhue was something not seen to reguarly 2 years ago and now every book, mag and web site is full of large dhue pics. i say well done to the anglers and well done to the dhue population.

The pro ban may have something to do with it. What crayfish movements as well?

Hmmm

More being caught equals less fish, not more fish.
They take 20+ years to get that big. Frown
I think we are all just getting better at it. A double edged sword if ever there was one.Innocent

Getting better

Sun, 2008-06-15 07:04

Yeah, makes sense Andy, unfortunately (nothing against those lucky enough to do it,  mind you). Perhaps better techniques are fooling the bigger ones that previously been 'smart' enough to not be enticed.

I can appreciate your comments Andy Mac, I really can. Probably better reason for 2 Jewfish bag limit per boat per day.
I dont think these people have suddenly had a major skill enhancement, the anglers showing the pictures have been fishing for Jew/Dhu for 20 years +.
Many of the fish have been much larger. One angler doesnt have a GPS in his tinnie.
Sometimes it would appear a GPS is a curse to catch Jewfish. Anglers become obsessed with GPS points driving around using their digital maps like some UBD SATNAV. Better off leaving it at home.
There just appears to be a bunch of big fish around and more of them in the Metro.

Agree Saltatrix

Sun, 2008-06-15 09:43

I was a bit facetious to suggest its just skill that has seen more bigger fish caught, I think its a combination of a lot of things:
Better equipment
Better Electronics
Better boats
Going further North/South and West
Fishing deeper
Higher water temps - Lewin Current
Less smaller fish so the big ones gets to the bait first
......
I could go on and on with theories as to why more big ones are being caught at the moment, but fish are one group of animals on this planet that we can't actually physically count very easily. Unlike Kangaroos and Rino's that you can get in a helicopter and physically see them and therefore count them, we have no real idea (other than extrapolation of catch data etc) how to count the dhuies or any other fish "particularly accurately" for that matter because they are under that stuff called water. Foot in mouth
So whilst I hope its a sign of good things happening in the ecosystem out there, I fear it is the complete opposite, as once these big mamas are gone, there may be some slim pickings ahead. A worrying sign in my view.Cry
I just hope to god its not a sign of a cleanout at the top of the food chain before a total collapse. I'm sure I've read somewhere how that can happen with other species.
Would be interested if anyone else has read something like that before and can elucidate.
Personally I haven't caught a big dhuie in ages.Wink

Log Books

Sun, 2008-06-15 09:49

we have no real idea (other than extrapolation of catch data etc) how to count the dhuies or any other fish "particularly accurately" for that matter -I think that's why the accurate use of, and submission of log bood data is so important - although, having filled on in for the first time, I'm going to knock up a 'scratch sheet' - it's impossible to write them up out on the water. Mind you, as I think your saying Andy it's not a simple stocktake on what's down there.

The metro pro ban will have

Sun, 2008-06-15 09:59

The metro pro ban will have no effect on Dhufish numbers as most pros that wetline fish north of Two rocks any way and that has been the case for the last 20 30 years. the only wetliners that fished metro were mainly the Deep water guys that fished for Snapper and cod. The metro ban will mainly help snapper numbers.

Back in the 80's bag limit was 10 reef fish per person any combination of species, so we have come along way since then with bag limits which can only help preserve fish stocks.

Some people will say you have to fish out further now, not really I have been in numerous comps and a few clubs over this time and people have fished out 90m plus for as long as I can remember, people just have more reliable boats, sounders and gps etc so they feel more confident going further offshore.

spawning

Sun, 2008-06-15 20:35

this is the time of year for dhuis to be spawning, i think the rise in water temp has set them off early for spawning than in previous years. up in kalbarri the good lumps that produce 30+ dhuis on during spawning are firing up early this year usually its towards the end of june to mid july but this year its early, water temp up there is still around 22deg which is pretty high for this time of year. More nutrients in the water column from the current flowing down helps. It would be great if reccos could have a log of dhuis caught w size sex length and god forbid tag and release to see the patterns which these fish have when it comes to spawning and certain spots. Every bit of info helps, the more involved the more info, not just rely on wetliners and fisheries for log and reports on fish.
