Best Stickbaits / Poppers / Lures for pelagics

Gents,

What are your favourite lures for casting to fish up north? Up to the mackerel islands soon and am armed with everything from Tango Dancers, Shimano Ocea's, Maria pop queen's, small Roosta poppers, yo-zuri' hyrdo poppers, Rapalla stick baits (forget name of model) etc etc... To go with soft plastics, metal's and larger poppers for GT's....

Any favourites to take into consideration?

Lots of decent lures out

Mon, 2009-07-27 13:49

Lots of decent lures out there, but dont forget the ol cheapies: Richter plugs and twisties. For the richter plugs, you wouldnt think such a poorly moulded piece of plastic and lead would work well, but they cast great and they skitter across the surface well. Theres better lures out there of course, but cheap lures means they can be sacrificial lures and you dont care as much if you end up loosing a heap :p Means you can stock up with a fair few incase you start loosing too many. I like the roostas for poppers. Even though they're cheaper, I can seem to work them well. Havent done a lot of popper fishing though.

A few other stickbaits for the list: bluescodes, R2S rovers, yozuri sashimi, saltiga dorado slider, and I think the x-walks were the rapala ones? Dont forget the pencil poppers too.

Thanks Matt... x-walks

Mon, 2009-07-27 14:17

Thanks Matt... x-walks sounds right. Haven't heard great things about Daiwa lures in general... I have everything covered - pencils, stickbaits, twisties, sp's, poppers etc etc... I have too much (I know you can appreciate this problem). Just looking for a few last minute have to gets...

The Yamashita range are supposedly great (although trying to find bull-chops is impossible)... Everyone has different opinions, and based on this I have covered all angles... Worst comes to worst I'll go back to the soft plastic store that I am carrying with me and the jig bag that seeems to get heavier every week.

I agree with the cheapie comment... twisties, sp's all covered. And have stocked up with cheap poppers and large Gillies stickbaits, which from all reports are magnificent (but get destroyed quick).

You tried any new jigs lately? I cna't get away from the Smith's - magic...

I like Richters Bones but I am no expert

The Pilbara lads seem to have a wide range of lures. I am sure they can point you in the right direction.

Too many? What does that

Mon, 2009-07-27 14:56

Too many? What does that mean, haha. I know what you mean about jigs though, I had to get another jigbag :p New jigs: not too many lately. Had a fisherman one from Kasey get smashed. Also tried some SW. Labs thin ones that look like the CB nagamasas. For their weight, they cut through the water really well (needs some working at the barges). The jacknifes look like a crap action, but amberjacks disagree. Theres a few new ones I've used in the last few months, but I need to check my jigbag to remember. Forecasts seem to work well (but recently went up in price unfortunately). I have a small list of jigs I want to get though (mostly shout, zest, OK and ima-ro).

Most of the time I use my go-to jigs: zest 100g's and smith CB's (depending on the action and profile size i want).

Yamashita also do the miss carnas. Theres a bunch of others that I dont seem to see very often like lucky craft. Again, I have no idea whats recommended to catch the fish, just giving options. I think bull chops are either discontinued or out of stock? Ocea stickbaits are the closest I can find but they're pretty pricey (well, compared to most poppers/stickbaits, not GT lures). The richter plugs are my replacement lure :p Can get a wide range of sizes, incl 1/2oz for my light rod which is a lot of fun.

The only problem with SP's is you cant belt them out like the metals/some stickbaits. Though comparatively cheap when using them of course. Try unweighted snapbacks if you can ;) Lighter sea rocks double as casting lures and cheaper jigs though, which can be quite useful.

Guessing you're taking some single strand and replacement hooks? Have you tried singles on any stickbaits/metals?

Mate

single strand, replacement hooks, assist cord, heaps of leader etc etc... bringing everything.

The singles / trebles argument is an interesting one, but the guys I listen to most recommend trebles on there poppers / stickbaits.... Mind you if I start losing fish I am ready to throw singles on.

I've tried a few on the twisties/richter plugs only, but not the poppers (trebles on anything that stops or is slower moving seems to make more sense to me).

Lock-up!

Tue, 2009-07-28 18:13

Bones, alot of guys say trebles as thats whats been the norm for so long!

I agree that the ST76 are the go for H/D trebs and probably give ya better hook-up but as for lock-up strength on big fish the SJ41 singles & Baker setup is the go. I'm fitting out my Weezel GT poppers that way for my Exmouth trip very soon.

The Maria Bullchops are due in next week, i'll be taking a few also for queenies etc!

Bull Chop's are available,

Mon, 2009-07-27 17:41

Bull Chop's are available, the wholesale price has gone up a LOT (on most yamashita and maria products) so the gear isn't getting stocked as much in shops now.

When I lived up in the NT

Mon, 2009-07-27 17:49

When I lived up in the NT there was 1 lure that caught more fish than any.. until a monster mack ate it for breakfast :( A Halco Roosta Popper in fluro pink! It always seemed to turn on the tuna and macks when they wouldn't hit the deep divers. Also make sure you get a few lures in gold... many days that was the only colour that was hit when trolling 4 rods with different colours. Have fun up there!

best all roud stickbait for

Mon, 2009-07-27 19:38

best all roud stickbait for larger fish IMO is the Orion 140 Bigfoot, my preferance is the orange and white.

Poppers, well i like anything around the 150-170g size that gives a HUGE presence in the water. All the reputable names are good, just try and get something with a quality wire through set up and finish.

dont forget 1 ounce white maribou jigs. They catch everything and cost bugger all. Last but not least they catch stacks of fish. I started to put mopre glue over the bind that holds the feathers on to make em last a bit longer.

Def have to upgrade splits

Tue, 2009-07-28 20:29

Def have to upgrade splits and hooks, on 150g poppers a min of 5/0 ST76's, with crushed barbs. Anything bigger than 150g and you can prob go to 7/0's or bigger. I have even trialed a bakers rig on chuggers with 2 11/0 sj41's and a trailing 12/0 jobu, havnt really had too much of an op to try it out yet.

On the stickies i def go two 9/0 opposing on the middle set and a trailing 11/0 Sj41 (again barbs crushed) on the rear

also use hypawire #11's

I had a shocking hookup rate

Tue, 2009-07-28 20:37

I had a shocking hookup rate at Bugatti using 11/0 bakers on the belly of my chuggers and also pulled the hooks on many fish. I was convinced by Glanville to try a big assist hook off the front of the popper and saw an instant improvement - definately a new rigging method I was able to bring back with me and I'll definately be using it at home.

Jay owner now have released 13/0 sj-41's these might work better on chuggers. But the single on the front also works great.

Bruce the Popper set up

Wed, 2009-07-29 14:54

After a few charters and a lot of feedback from shops this is the set up that people have been chasing in FNQ for big GT's. Hooks are 6X gut busters.

that is almost the bakers

Sun, 2009-08-02 18:19

that is almost the bakers rig we have been talking about
you put a very small cable tie on the belly hooks

the other option is to run an assist off the front of the popper as Jay and a few others mentioned

some of the caharter companies also have a "singles only" rule, there is no arguement that trebbles can cause more damage to a fish, that is the main reason a lot of the charters switched to singles, they fish for them so often it makes sense to minimise damage to fish

IMO thee is still a BIG place for trebbles, people will say that the hook up rate and dropped fish rate does not change switching to singles, i still think that a set of ST76's ar pretty good at hooking and holding on to fish

Here is another point

In NEW cal on LPB , a place where BIG GT's are the norm and the charter company has a reputation as good as it does. How come they still fish with trebbles??

short answer, because they work
