Best gaff?

Anyone got recommendations on a good gaff?

I must be too vigorous with my grey coat landing (relax - only for ones getting eaten) because I seem to keep bending the handles on the ally ones and concerned about the wood ones snapping.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Grab em by the tail and drop

Grab em by the tail and drop em on the deck, then wack em with the priest. No need to gaff, i gave up after bending to many ally gaffs as well. Bit of an adrenalin rush if you do it quick all is good.

Wooden hoe handles

We used to buy the jarrah hoe handles and use stainless hose clamps to fix the gaff point. With the extra weight you can really drive the point in and it gives enough impetus to help carry whatever you are gaffing straight in .

Drill a hole and put a loop of rope as a lanyard on the end of the handle so you can attach a leader to it if the subject being gaffed is too big.

We used that type of gaff for years on shark boats up north and down south on tigers, hammers and biiig wobbies with great success and very few breakages.

Spent a bit of time on a shark boat over east. Drop lines over night ( so maybe not so feisty ) but once you have a solid hold be ready to let the gaff handle spin in your hands. They tend to put in a death roll or 2. We used to let them roll until they were done. Don't try and hold the gaff too tight, let em spin!

Cheers
