Baldchin Groper

Just wondering if someone can fill me in on catching baldies..

Ive managed to catch one or 2 in the past, but not really sure what depths, type of reef, baits to use etc...

I know Dhuies stick around broken ground, and snapper is generally better on larger lumps (From my experience anyway)

But I've found baldies taste bloody awesome, and even over the weekend i was hoping to get a couple, but sadly they were not around.

So if anyone could provide some info for me would be awesome.

Ive been fishing in the 30-40m range, on both lumpy ground and just broken ground...

Do baldies school or swim in pairs?

Thanks!

Baldie's

 Bob gets them roughly on what you've stated broken ground, but depends where you fish from, Leeman's broken ground, he usually gets the dhuie's and his mate always seems to catch the baldies, in same ground, occie is his favourite bait (threads it on like it was a small squid, tentacles moving around) and he has just told me to drop your hook size (on top) from 8 0 to 6 0 or 7 0 limerick, hope this helps.

Maybe thats my biggest problem, i have the rig setup for Dhuies with size 10/o bottom hook.

I will try down size.

i thought about going out deeper into the 50-60m mark on the back of direciton bank, but never got round to it.

Thanks for the tips...will give it a crack this weekend :)

Try using a taiwana hook off

Try using a taiwana hook off your sinker loop loaded with an occy tenticle, nice small hook that wont snag the bottom and baldies prefer the bait on the bottom, proven winner. Flat coral is where you'll pick up many.

Baldies

That's all good info there...baldies aren't big "fish eaters" in the same sense as dhuies or snapper so it's best to stick with things like squid and occy. Cray would work as well but the only legal way you can use it for bait is by putting a whole, legal-sized one on the hook, and even then you could be breaking the law!

Having said that, we got two baldchin on mulies at Jurien two weeks ago, using double-snelled 5/0's!

crabs

The only time I did realy well on Baldies Bodie was in Gnarloo when we used live crabs. We caught over 20 baldies for the week in my tinnie and I think only two were not on crabs. We used to collect them on the beach after dinner with a beer in one hand and a bucket in the other. Good fun and rewarding.

Tips Bodie;

* 6/0 chem sharp hook

* Long bottom dropper that runs past your sinker (low to the bottom)

* Squid heads for bait, small pieces!

* Coral lumps & broken ground & coral

* 35-45m or 60-75m

* Dont strike, let them take the bait in and wait for the rod load!

I do agree, baldys are tasty as ....... i rate them highly!

up at steep we go get fresh

Wed, 2008-10-22 20:11

up at steep we go get fresh crabs that are on the sides of the rocks, snap them in half and thread the hook so it pokes out the first 1/4 of a leg, kind of makes it look like the hook is another leg, they seem to smash these up there but not sure down here.
