Apprenticeship

 Hey Fishos

Looking for an apprenticeship for my son, he is interested in electrical not so sure about mechanical? Although he has applied for heavy duty diesel mechanic assistant as well.

He is willing to get some unpaid experience to get his feet in the door, tried applying for the pre apprenticeship but was unsessesful. He is 18 has a excellent work ethic knows everything about cars and computers, has worked for woolworths on the mandurah foreshore for the last 4 years and has excellent refrences. He did complete and graduate year 12.

If anyone knows of anything close to rockingham/mandurah please drop me a line.

Thanks

Shane

whats he like to do

Id suggest finding what he really likes to do - is good at and enjoys to go into as a trade. Hear of so many youngns dropping out after 3 years of not liking it and trying something else after their parents said this is what you should do. Just from what ive seen on our site with local kids.

If he's looking for an electrical apprenticeship tell him to apply at EGT, they're a group training organization and can organise pre-apprenticeships and full apprenticeships. We get all our apps through them
Would definitely reccomend doing a pre-app first too

Try AHG website, as they seem

Try AHG website, as they seem to look after quite a few dealerships.

I also think they have an apprenticeship scheme.

Some people may laugh, but the defence force has a great training program, join as an adult trainee, good money for what they offer, plenty of travel. The ADF is not for everybody, but you will learn a hell of alot of life skills and have a great time as well.

I love cars and wanted to

I love cars and wanted to be a mechanic  did work experience at a major service centre... I hated it there, I changed my mind straight away...they had me doing service after services on grandma cars when I was 15 soooo boring

my point is  if he really loves cars and mechanics try get him somewhere he won't loose interest.

like a performance place. Or what ever tickles his fancy...otherwise I'm afraid he will end up a gyprocker like me

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships

Funny, I remember during the "boom", on page 3 of West Australian a mother getting a writeup saying that her son got a cabinet maker apprenticeship.
After 3 months she pulled him out of it as "he hadnt made any cabinets, just cleaned the workshop, machines and did little jobs"
He probably holds up a lollipop at the roadworks now.
Apprenticeships have changed a lot over the years here in Aus and not all for the better I think.
20-30 years ago here an apprentice was in a contract between his parents and employer and there was no quitting it cos you didnt like it etc.
Any apprentice who will be worth his salt as a tradie learns to clean, service and respect his machinery before he learns to actually use it.
There was a method in that madness and it was tried and true.
