Too close to the reef maybe, pulling pots. 4 lucky punters, epirb came in handy.

Swell was absolutely pumping down here in Marg's today so there must have been a bit of swell up there too! Glad everyone is ok.

PFD modification
I have the self inflating PFD and after looking at it and thinking a bit I'm going to get a crotch strap fitted so that when it's inflated it won't be able to ride up and come off over your head in rough weather, has anybody else thought of this improvement or am I being over cautious.

Some of you guys may
Some of you guys may remember that I was capsized a year ago, off Leeman. I could not reach the EPIRB, which was located on the starboard side upper bulkhed inside the clears, in the wheelhouse. I lost my Brother and two of us clung to the upturned hull for 4 hours until, by a stroke of luck, aboat happened to see us and rescue us. Point I am makng here is that the guys in this incident were able to get their EPIRB with the boat upside down. CAN YOU?????
If not, move youe EPIRB to a position where you can.
Good idea on the crotch strap on your inflatable lifejacket BTW, a lot do not have this fitment.

I hate the term king wave,
I hate the term king wave, I've surfed since I could walk. In all those hours chasing waves I've never seen one so why is it when people fuck up its because the mysterious king wave!
People that use the ocean need a basic understanding of short and long swell periods, tide, swell direction etc etc.
Dreamtime did U see Boatys, it sounds like it was all time.

King Waves
They do happen, son was bringing a trawler down from Exmouth to Fremantle for end of season refit when they got snottered by a king wave in 15 fathoms of water off Point Quobba. Son reckons he saw it coming 2 waves away and they didn't have time to do anything, smashed the whole front of the wheelhouse in and filled it with water, worst part of the wheelhouse full of water is that the 240 volt switchboard is there too and zapped both of thembadly before it tripped the system.
We. Cvon Sea Rescue got the call when the vessel tracking showed they were off course and they didn't have radio contact, they were lucky that the engine was on a different circuit and kept running. Once located we led them in to Carnarvon for repairs
I have been lucky and only had one thats blown the windows out, son has also had the wheelhouse on the same crayboat wiped off twice when decky on TI working out of Two Rocks

Timboon, I've been on the water for many years and in all that time hadn't seen one either. However I have seen one at Canal Rocks when fishing. They are rare, I would imagine they would only happen maybe once a year at any particular spot, and you have to be in the right place at the right time to see it. There's no doubt at all that this was a king wave that I saw.

Okay that would have been
Okay that would have been frightening from your description!
I don't really buy into the king wave scenario either but thye obviuosly do happen on occasions. Most times I think people use them to describe what we always called sneakers when we were surfing. Every now and then a much bigger set would come through and clean everyone up. What you described was much more than that.

Yeah the old 'out the back'.
Yeah the old 'out the back'. Was at Smiths on a 6m swell and we were all surfing the beach break between mains and supers because the reefs were washed out and the entire lineup got wiped out by a sneaker.

Horrie
Was the description back in my day, and yeah, yelling out the back to get everyones attention that a horrie was coming through, usually third wave in the set.

The closest sort of incident
The closest sort of incident I've had to a king wave was about 20K's out once on a fairly good day and a huge container ship passed behind us about a km away. The wake reached us was about 1.2-1.5m tall so it smacked the arse end of the boat and nearly sent us over. Always keep an extra eye out for the big ships now at steam.

Ok let me ask, what does a wave have to do to become a king wave?
Break in an area where previously they hadn't been?
Break bigger than they previously had been?
We all know what creates a wave right?
Wind/fetch.... So how does 1 wave amongst all others become a king?
I call bullshit.
With due respect Canarvon, a new swell can start to pulse in a short period of time. One minute it's 2m and the next hour pushing 3 then pushing 4 etc.
So while that swell is building of course the energy levels increase and depending on bathymetry and direction you'll get wave/waves breaking where they hadn't been.
Feel free to scientifically correct me but I call king waves bullshit.
I call people who blame king waves complacent.

Well..
Understand why 'king wave' sounds like an excuse, but here's my tale..
A year or so back, i was off Eagle Bay, (N-W Rotto) in ~2.0 swells, 15kn southerly wind.
As I was travelling at ~10 knots, deciding whether or not to go into the bay, 2 sequential waves came though, both significantly taller than my flybridge, which put them over 5m.
I needed full throttle to climb them safely, backing off at the top each time.
Their profile was far steeper than the other swells. The following swells were straight back down to 2.0 -2.5m.
Don't know how or why, but I turned straight aorund and headed back to Thomson instead.

Had similar at Eagle Bay. It can get very scary there at times. You really need to watch what is happening closely and be careful of tide changes. You really need to know your way around to be safe.

We as surfers refer to them
We as surfers refer to them as set waves.
Depending on the period you'll have long or short intervals.
The bigger the period the longer the time between "set" waves.
The shorter the period the more frequent.
The longer the period the more energy is carried, people also refer to long period swell as ground swell.
Short period is a lot more gutless but can also be more uncomfortable in a boat.
Your situation Bill could've been caused by the bathymetry.
Bottom changes, set appears at same time, swell lumps right up.
When people refer to king waves, I assume the Sydney to Hobart of 96 was a full royal family of king waves.
You don't have to be Einstein to realise that with a large swell and strong wind the peaks of each wave will get blown over having the appearance the wave is breaking.
A wave cannot break if it's in deep water unless it's affected by wind.
Again I call king waves BS

The period between
Swells start way out in the ocean by weather events days ago. If you look at swell charts you will see the period between swells varies. However a swell with a shorter period can catch up to a longer period swell. If that coincides with shallow ground then the cumulative height and power of the swell will increase. Even as a young bloke body surfing you would see the occasional wave almost twice the height. If your boat is in the wrong place at the wrong time then watch out.
One time at Kalbarri at the little swimming beach next to red bluff a wave came through that washed right up to the sand dunes. Mums, dads and little kids all washed into the backwash.

... while i would not write
... while i would not write off ''king waves '' im sure they do happen , but much less frequntly than there blamed for events
im more inclined to think the name gets bandied about quite loosely to cover a multitude of other issues when boaties are either not aware or not paying attention to conditions on the day or when there changing
if the swell is ''up '' i like to sit and watch it for 10 -15 mins before we decide if we will venture out to check pots or fish etc ....over the years off margs and even recently a few weeks ago we had a look on arrival at launch site and called it as too big and too risky to go ,unexpectadly the swell was pumping over 3.5 metres , big sets , , then it would lay off for 5 mins or so ..11pm night ebfore it was sitting at 1.5 mtres ..came up overnight ........long drive to turn and go home .. but right choice given the conditions
inbetween you got the usual sets , then the odd bigger one , ''sneaker or lifter ''., even when your familiar with apatch of coast or water , it pays to stop and check it out before you launch ,,
usually id wager its the titanic effect that brings people to grief , its not just the iceberg , but series of other things that happen that contribute to the final problem or disaster
