Abrolhos Island spanish mackeral

Gday guys Im heading to abrolhos islands in a few weeks if weather permits. Just wondering if anybody has got spanish mackeral ariound Hummock island, Gee Bank, around the coral patches or on the east side of Pelsaert island. We gonna be boating around that general area and would rather not travel all the way down to Wreck point (ive heard spanish mackies are caught regularly down there) cheers Dave

I caught a nice 1.20m mackie near the Hummock once

Was ripping a Squidgy SP back from the bottom in around 30m between two lumps and got smashed mid water. Didn't get bitten off somehow as the SP was right in the side of the jaw. I did have a nice photo on my digital camera, but I was leaning over the gunwhale later that day and the camera fell out of my pocket lol. Put up a good fight on the SP outfit.

Good luck!

Limits in area in place

 On top of demersal bans....

From 1 February 2023, wilderness fishing arrangements in the Abrolhos Islands Fish Habitat Protection Area include:

reduced bag limits of one demersal scalefish and one large pelagic finfish; and

reduced finfish possession limits of 5 kilograms of fillets from any species, plus 5 kg of fillets from large pelagic finfish (must have skin attached for identification purposes); OR one day's bag limit of whole or trunked fish.

Yes it has been put to 3

Yes it has been put to 3 fish.

However unfortunately until they change the wording of the possession limits to "10kg of fillets including a max of 5kg demersal" it doesnt make much difference.
Even with a 1 fish limit you could catch and release them til the cows come home i you can only keep 5kg.
At the moment ir reads 5kg pelagic, about 1 fillet of mackie

changing limits

Great news - but seriously - how am I supposed to keep up? I pasted the information from fish.wa.gov.au accurate on 31/01/2023

I googled the results and found the above, I was busy working and not reading fishing news last week ... and then I don't know. Fishing Abrolhos was high on my priorities this year before all these new bans.

It really is a pretty depressing situation at the moment. I don't want to kill a lot of fish, but I would like the opportunity to fish recreationally maybe 6 times a year ... and when I am free neeed others to be free, the winds to be down and no ban in place... current count this year is zero minutes fishing ...

Yes agree, I found out after

Yes agree, I found out after a call from Andrew Rowlands.

That was a while back and I did post it here somewhere but 100% agree DPIRD is lagging and it begs the question once again, are they a law unto themselves and just cherry picking what they want from Punch?

And whistling Dixie when it doesnt suit their agenda...

Am I despondent-fuck yeah, this is our playground for anyone in the Midwest.
I'm just putting the finishing touches to my new boat, and looks like I'll be eating chicken wings and hoki fillets once Im tired of crays when out at the islands.

We are blessed with a local MP who has no interest in rocking the boat (and I know her socially)

I'm not a quitter, but its burning me out.
