8" Chartplotters comments invited with a consideration towards update rates
I should preface this by mentioning that there is no consideration to be put to the use as a sounder, thats covered, and its for use with a Furuno FCV585.
Is there any real difference between 12 and 16ch receivers in the real world?
Has anyone used more than one brand regularly?
Simrad NSE8: 1.6ghz processor, 512mb internal ram, 80GB HDD, 800x600, 8" LCD <-=- big jump in price, video in and out, around $2800
Raymarine C80: 256 colour, 8.4" 640x480 display, uses navionics, plenty of softbuttons, 12ch GPS receiver, 150-45sec fix on coldstart, 8 sec to fix after starting.
Raymarine C90W: 65k colour, 9" 800x480 display, uses navionics, plenty of softbuttons, 12ch GPS receiver, 150-45sec fix on coldstart, 8 sec to fix after starting, supports video input (cool, but seriously...)
Lowrance HDS-8 .. or 8m?: 800x600, 16mil colours, 16ch gps receiver, uses navionics
Simrad NX40: 800x600, 8.4", c-map (ugh!)
Standard Horizon CP500: new brand? 12" 800x600, 256colour, cmap (ugh!) 3 year warranty (!!!), lots of soft keys, video in, 3yr warranty - but only $1640. They also do a 7" touchscreen wifi one for $1500US as well!
After that the options get bit vague! They all seem to be much the same price, say around $2k.

I run a HDS 10M as I don't need a sounder as I run a 585 and is a great setup. I have linked up structure scan and Radar and looking at the new sonic hub down the track. Value for money Lowrance is the go. Shop around and you should be able to get a HDS8 for under $1800 or $2k with a card. I paid $1850 for a HDS 10M in Perth.
Simrad NX40 has been replaced with the NSE8 which is awsome. Faster processor, clear screen, built in maps but expensive. Lowrance is value for money. If I had my time again though I would only have Simrad.
Have fun deciding. Search the web and see whats floating around for info.

Not more more than a couple of minutes anyhow ;)
Might add that NSE8 to the list, looks ok really. I've used the Lowrance and don;t mind it as a plotter, always curious about the update rates because I've heard a few complaints there too.

Boat
Dont you need to get a boat first Jamie? An 8" GPS is going to look funny on the scooter LOL.
Agree with the Simrads. Look good but lots of $.
I like my Lowrance as a GPS only. Easy to look at updates quick enough.

Ahh its not for my boat, just putting it out there after the last trip.
The Standard Horizon stuff looks ok too, but it would seem its hard to beat the Lowrance at the price point.

Just trying to find out if anything is glaringly laggy, or other flaws obvious to people that have used more than one kind of plotter.

A GPS is a GPS to me. The only thing I think that matters is the screen is a reasonable size.
A sounder finds the fish, a GPS only puts you in the right area.
I have A HDS7-M more than enough for what I do.

Not sure about lag, or
Not sure about lag, or responsiveness, but unforunately you cant get GPS pings more often than once per second, so any updates between that would only be extrapolated (so perhaps none bother)

Till Check out the Raymarine
Till Check out the Raymarine E80s. They are simple to use and also have the option for video in/out, radar and sonar if you choose to go down that path. They also run the Navonics/Gold Platinum charts. The only thing to condiser is the Card reader is not for an SD card like it is on the Lowrance.
