3 must-have lures for yellowfin tuna
Submitted by Notorious on Sat, 2015-01-03 22:52
So I have accepted the fact that shooting one is near on impossible. So trolling for YF tuna is the only option, what are the 3 lures I must have to give me a decent chance? I have no idea about trolling.

Old school...
...metal-bibbed Rapala CD-14 (yes the smaller one) in the Silver Mackerel pattern, which is actually blue with black stripes. Caught two YFT'S, one 20kg, dead of winter, back of the reef in Jurien with that lure!
Or, my mate got a similar sized one at the Abrolhos on a Halco 190 shallow runner, King Brown color.
Or, if trolling out at Fads/trench, I'd use a skirted pusher, 8-10" in length, in a green/yellow (dolly) pattern, but that's not from personal experience...just an un-edu-ma-cated guess!
Or, just ignore all that and pm JohnF.

Best Lures for Yellowfin
No.1 Halco Laser Pro 190dd in King Brown (H70) change the hooks to the inline singles , middle hook point down rear hook point up.size 7/0
No.2 Pink and white skirt ( Richter , Williamson ,Black Bart etc etc) on a good Quality Stainless straight J style hook.
No.3 More of the above or a distant third is a large bibless Maurader style lure (Purple Black , sometimes good for the 50kg+ models.
If you want to shoot one go to Fiji in March/April/May!
Good Luck

Old time favourite
One for when you don't have your lures with you that still produces is a piece of red rag tied directly to the hook, only needs to be less than a foot long and towed at around 5-6 knots.

Wasnt trying to get YFT.But
Wasnt trying to get YFT.
But in Dampier found a R2S Triho BRBA33 and GK22 (basically red head variations) scored (with upstrenght hooks).
Was lazy as I got these to tease Cobes from Mantas after years ago watching Steve Correia doing it. Decided to troll these home and YFT jumped onboard. So tried them again and still produced.
Not my Numero-uno but I would have these at number 3 after halco LP (redhead or king Brown) and pushers (I think any, but prefer Richter - and Red/white variations)
Oh and by the way, the Triho's IMO is the best for Cobes under mantas, But upstrenght the hooks.

Was chasing some feeding YFT
Was chasing some feeding YFT today for about 45 mins.
Tried 3 different lures with no luck. (x rap, laser pro 120, and a gold halco twisty). Think i was casting to the right areas so not sure what i'm doing wrong.
I did notice that the baitfish were quite a bit smaller than my lures so i'm guessing that's where my problem lies...

Thanks for the posts
Thanks for the posts guys!
Today on the way back from Rotto I thought I'd try trolling for the first time ever with my new red head rapala lure. Was going well until some rich peanut with a huge boat decided to pass within 20m of my lure and cut it off. Hope the braid got stuck around your prop you bastard.
Lure gone, back to the tackle shop I go

Phht, bycatch, they'll take anything you drag across in front of them, in the mood..:-) :-) :-). My Pb was 42 Kg, on 10kg mono, 3 ganged 5/0's and a floating mulie meant for a snapper, so go figure..

My ultra deep diver keeps
My ultra deep diver keeps swimming to the right, now I hear I have to tune the lure for it to swim straight, how do I do this properly?
Also, say small tuna or bonito (2-4kgs) smashing bait for the better part of an hour today, I was flinging a 25g metal slice at them with no joy and they didnt touch it. Does this happen often? would I need to reduce metal slice size, or use mono instead of braid, or use a stick bait or what?
Wish I had my speargun onboard, was so clear today, would have done better jumping in!

opposite
Just bend the towing eye in small increments the opposite way to the lure
If its tracking to the right, bend the eye to the left, pliers on the towing eye, and then bend a little at a time until it swims straight.
