This photo was taken in March 2010 & they said they have seen up to 10 billfish in their coolrooms. The ship crew bragged about taking these fish back to China to make good money from! The crew said they usally fish at night. SO WRONG!!!! :(
so what dosnt look like there breaking any rules .....man if these ships didnt come then you be complaining got no work not earning the big bucks theres nothing wrong with eating bill fish any specices if you want ...
Sorry mate but I disagree with you. This has been a hot subject on FW during the last couple of months, it would be worth reading the other thread to see the exact rules that they ARE breaking.
Long story short, it is against international maritime law and I highly doubt that they have an Australian fishing licence. The same licence that every person in Australia need to have before they fish from a boat.
I agree that without these ships we would have no jobs, and i have no problem with any one fishing for a feed. It is just a shame that these fish (one of our greatest prized sports fish)are being killed by the hundreds, just to line the pockets of the crew when they get home.
No mate not saying that at all your comments just crap but you look at that pic theres no rules being broken 2 fish and the story bout them being sold thats just hear say no prof dont even no if that photo comes from one of the ship ( not saying its not) but evey one jumps up and down over it crazy its a photo of a couple fish thats all i no there a awsome game fish but evey one see them diffrent sport fish or just a good eating fish they tast good to eaten them plenty times andi will keep another so what ...
It's not just about the sailfish, but also the undersize fish in the buckets. On a good day off Dampier you will find ships with 5 or more lines off the sterns, calculate that when you've got 20 ships sitting out wide waiting to come into port. These guys admit they take turns to fish when they're off duty to try and get as much as they can. Often when I load ships from the BLB jetty I am constantly asked whether they can fish while berthed, and part of our job is to make sure there is no lines in the water. These guys know they are exploiting our fishing regs but have obviously found a loophole to get away with it. There are plenty more photos circulating 'spearfisher' to suggest it's a major concern, not just a couple that you've seen on this forum. Dampier is not the only port with the same problem, Port Hedland is also copping it as much as here.
Looks to me if they have a few on board over bag limits then could be construed as a commercial operation?? I don't really have a major problem if they are just catching and eating them. It's when they start stockpiling and taking them to China or whereever to sell is when the authorities need to step in in and can what they are doing.
Just another way to exploit Australias fisheries, i think its poor form. the fact they have no decent fish in there part of the ocean is there own fault really.
but I just cant get my head around the numbers being mentioned here. The ship anchorage at Dampier is an area of just a couple of miles by a couple of miles.
If hundreds and hundreds are being caught, and its still a hotspot for locals and this has been going on for years then it doesnt seem to be endangering the stock at all?
Also Id expect the bottom to have been long raked bare by anchor chains sliding across the bottom so Id doubt theres much in the way of reef fish there?

That's pretty much the same
That's pretty much the same as "if you don't like them drilling for oil in x, then don't type on a plastic keyboard" etc etc.
Are you seriously suggesting that if fishing was banned from them the ships wouldn't come?
Just the same as if they stopped drilling in ecologically sensitive aras there would be no oil?

Apparently some do have a fishing license, but of course they are breaking the rules if they resell the fish.
Although most likely unenforceable, they should be made to consume them in Aus waters.

Anchored Ships
Ships unfortunately make great FADs, I think this is why the crews have major success.
