Charter

Charter

Went out with Port Bouvard charters last Friday. Fishing pretty slow all day as we slowly worked our way out to deeper water. Apart from a small pinky not much else caught till lat arvo. The fish where on the sounder but not interested in having a feed.....We ended up in 110m of water, about 40 odd mile out. Caught a few red snapper, grey nurse shark and other odds and sodds. Skipper worked pretty hard to find some fish for us ...must of changed spots 20 times. But that fishing!!! spent two and a half hours getting back in.Long day, not many fish but we all had a good time. These two snapper where a double header.

Cheers

Is that Mono?

Thu, 2008-05-01 09:34

Freobear is that mono on the alvey behind you? Fishing in 110m of water with mono is a waste of time. Thought most charters would run braid these days.

Nice pair FreoBear

Charters can be tough when the fish are few and far between - but a double can make up for it.

the last three iv'e

Thu, 2008-05-01 11:39

the last three iv'e been on have been similar. Maybe they just keep pounding the same areas...who knows. Disapointing as they are not getting any cheaper.

I fish up north once or twice a year and we do pretty well off to shark bay in June on shark bay charters. I hope things get better there.!!

Pricing

Thu, 2008-05-01 12:57

I was a guest of one of my suppliers but he was saying it was $220 per head for a max of 18 people. Big bucks. about that "catch phrase" thing, you are paying premium dollars with no guarantee of fish....some people would call that stupid....but as we know fishing is like that!!

The other catch phrase " maybe next time" gets used alot!

Unfortunatley it's all too frequent these days I used to go on charters a few times a year but not anymore just too many fishless or very few fish caught days and at $220 per person 4 trips like that and I could pay for a week in exmouth towing my boat up

To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!

Why?

Thu, 2008-05-01 13:04

With respect to the piscatorial equivalent of audiofiles (vinyl(analogue) vs Cds(digital)),  why do some charters use mono - esp in decent depths?

agree

I never use charter gear as I have never seen decent gear supplied by the operators!!

I suppose they have to use gear that is sturdy, idiot proof and cheap enough to fit into their budget.

But at depth mono does not compete with braid ....Just imagine the tangles when 18 guys are over the side and a shark comes through!!! nightmares Ha Ha

To Be Fair...

There's certainly charters that provide excellent gear (we know which ones). I would have thougfht that it would be in the better interests of charter skippers to provide braid and circles (perhaps) to maximise hookup chances. Different if you are trolling or otherwise targetting pallegics of course.

Oh, and shoulder to shoulder with a circling sharky playing christmas rapper with all those adjacent rigs would not be my idea of fun LOL.

..and congrats on a nice couple of reds BTW :)

Shikari

Thu, 2008-05-01 16:33

You better get out with SHIKARI then he only uses TOP END jigging gear , even when bottom bouncing , Stella's , Van Stall's , Saltigas, Torsa's etc etc all running quality braid and terminal gear ( Owner hooks etc)

I went out 3 weeks ago and the boat had about 25 good fish in the ice box at the end of the day with 8 people on board .

they use mono so the deckie

Thu, 2008-05-01 22:39

they use mono so the deckie can untangle everyone fast.the day i went out on portbouvard charters we did well around 15 pinkies,2dhuies,15 big skippy, big sambos and 3 10foot bronzies.good day in 65m.but then went on aqualib no fish all day then the last drift off the day 6 dhuies in one bite biggest 18kg.that day was frustrating no fish till the end.and traveled from mandurah to my ground off mylup ,binningup.he traveled south 2 hrs. at the end off the day i catch more on my own boat.but the price is resonable .its like being a pro fisherman every one thinks u kill it every trip ,u have good days and crap days

Makes sense...

Yeah kaneo, that makes sense (for all the wrong reasons Laughing) - easier untangling mono that braid - but at a high 'bite' price ay?

Fright colours

Sat, 2008-05-03 09:21

Could be fright colours, some fish also do it when necked or ikijimied.  See the pink baldie I posted up about a year and a half ago.

my take!

Sat, 2008-05-03 14:55

Nice red snapper for sure and yes one is still in fright colours.

Charter boats out of Mandurah these days head South approx 2hrs steaming (4 hours in total)......sad signs of past pressure imo

Charter boats can get you onto fish but it's also ppl's perspective. Some are happy to get a fish or two and have an experience where some want their $220 worth etc....these two thoughts are what i've experienced when working on a charter boat and what i currently see/hear in my shop.

Charter boats and rec boats in general have good days & bad days and yes the fish on the sounder not firing ie schooling fish does happen.

There's Nebraska Charters Freo and Seasport Tackle Charters Jurien that does well and they have crayfisherman as drivers and crayfishing marks......less pressured spots. If our charter boat happens which it looks like at this stage i'll be able to recommend another one for the metro area but like the two already mentioned we'll be fishing many spots/not hammering and not too much steaming!

Last but not least, they call it "fishing" and not "catching" for a reason......can be frustrating in saying that!

Fishing Not Catching!

Sat, 2008-05-03 16:08

HaHa Ryan - bloody long time since I heard that expression - but it's so true! Laughing

Still; I suppose if you pay around $200.00, most would have an expectation (that can't always be realised I know).

control!

Sat, 2008-05-03 16:24

Yes, you can pay $200 on a fishing charter but its a big ocean and your relying on fish to bite when they themselves control that.....not the charter!

Exmouth Charter

Sat, 2008-05-03 17:26

Having just returned from Exmouth 2 weeks ago, a guy I met at the motel paid $180 for himself and one child for a fishing charter. He brought his own rods fitted with braid and was told to leave them in his car. He was issued with a handline!!!! Not happy Jan.

Some charters want you to

Mon, 2008-05-05 17:31

Some charters want you to only use there gear as all there gear has the same line on and will reduce line tangles.
