I was thinking along the lines of an old coke bottle and some handline myself.

Dinkum
Fair dinkum, using a handline allows you to cast the lure exactly where you want and gives you more control when you have one on especially next to the boat. As you lift it from the water you can grasp it with the other hand right behind the head stopping it from squirting ink all over everything.
Usually use el cheapo yozri jigs in two colours, green and a pink, and as big as possible. Have seen small squid leave a small jig and attack the big one even though its bigger than itself.

I use a bream outfit for everything but bream; herring, squid, dollies, salmon. It was a Daiwa Saltwater 6-10lb and a Sol 2500 but its going to be a Nitro Voodoo and a Bradia 2500R RSN!

abu garcia 6500C4 and a abu
abu garcia 6500C4 and a abu garcia 6ft 6-10kg baitcaster rod. Doubles as a small creek outfit, you can still get a good action on the jig and with the size of the squid up here they are taking drag on the hit with 6kgs and 2kgs of drag.

Okuma Flame F-S-661ML 3-5 SPIN
and a Okuma V system 1000.
Doubles as a light rod up here.
Second squid outfit is certainly a LT double with a Dropshot pro and Shimano saragosa 3000. Overkill for squid but a quick change of lure turns it into a light spin/plakie beasty.
Cheers

Jarvis Walker K Mart special
Cost $20.Was kids first flick rod. 2 ring guides missing. Use jarvis walker jigs that picked up on special for $1 each. Line was on the reel.
Always catch a dozen or so.
Nothing fancy needed for squid.

yer this might be true in
yer this might be true in most places but in heavly fished(squidded) metro waters from shore the squid are likly to have seen many a jig. so if u use a cheap jig lik its seen 100 times before its not gonna take it. but if u have a nice new bait fish looking squid jig that sinks right and hangs right ur chances increase heaps.
as for the rod i was a lik u dont need one wen i first started squidding but once owning and useing one it feel soooooooo much better and you can work ur jigs easyer. it also helps with casting and less pulled hook coz the rod folds in half on the squids lunges.
all im saying is yer u can use cheap stuff and i have to with a few results. but once u use a squidding rod and good jigs ur catch rate will increase. the good jigs which do cost more do last longer if looked after and make the difference wen land based to temp those squid that hav seen the cheap jigs over and over. all this equiptment isnt going to guarante you squid but make its more enjoyable. JMO

Probably True Danno if you are land based....
I drift for them in the boat .
I fish metro and get my dozen plus in a morning and generally big ones, so cant justify forking out $20 for a squid jig (we have tried them against standard cheapie on the boat a few times and there was no noticable difference in catch rates).
Generally it is the colour more than the jig that dictates catch for me.
Dont go landbased squidding so the more flash jigs might be the go.
As long as you catch them, thats the main thing !!

Yea its all a Hype!
I lined up a $3.00 hand line with 1kg of crap line( i always use) and a $3.50 budget bin green jig i think in 3.5g weight. Against a $30 jig and a $500 outfit..
The only difference i saw was my mate and his blingage was catching small cuttlefish.
And with all that $$$ blingage shine! I think he caught the attention of the navy security guards that quickly motored up to us and promted us to move 20 metres West.(after they took boat rego). Coz we were in a Commonwealth army Zone.
Ive been fishing the place for half a decade and until he brought his bloody rod with all the shiny bling, ive had no trouble!!!!!
Now instead of getting 3 squid a drift per person we gotta deal with 1 if lucky and a bunch of fucking turds that try and jump in front of your drift!!!
OOOOOOOH THE METRO LIFE!!!!!
CHIC... CHIC...
