Yellow tail as live bait

When I catch yellow tail (by boat out from City Beach) I use them as live bait. I place a approx size 10 hook through the tail of the fish just above the spine so that it remains in good shape and is still quite mobile. My logic for hook placment is that the fish will be attacked from behind.

A bloke at work said I should be placing the hook closer to the head (you might call it the the shoulder of the fish) as this will provide the yellow tail with more mobility.

Does anyone have an opinion/ advice on this?

the shoulder for me

Would place it in the shoulder to let the tail free to swim. Would think the tail hook would slow it down and be in danger of dragging it backwards and killing it. I would also prefer to bridal rig with rubber band through the eye socket when dropping from a boat, no good for casting , but from a boat it works well.

Bridal rigging - Everytime I

Bridal rigging - Everytime I get on this website I learn something new.

Is the yellow tail still a good live bait with out eyes - I guess it wouldnt matter, would it - It would just flounder around until something bigger comes along.

Whats the exact reason for bridal rigging, as the bait would already be secured nicely with a hook though its shoulders?

Well, while we're all

Well, while we're all learning, its bridle rigging. Its more to do with horses than new wives.

Adventure Bound have a demo on youtube.

lol you dont take out its eyes :) you use a bait needle to thread under the eyes and thro the cavity .. doesnt kill the fish.

personally i use the shoulder area as its quicker and works just fine for me on almost all live baits. id only bother bridal rigging a live/dead bait for bill fish

if hooking it that way has

if hooking it that way has worked (and it certainly works for me especially when using circles) then you don't really need to change.

What are you targeting with the livie? and are you just trolling it, drifting etc? I've seen blokes cut the top/bottom fins off livies to affect their swimming

I was targetting a small

I was targetting a small bronzie/ hammer head and anything else that would take the yellow tail. I have never had any real success through the tail. I thin I will try the shoulder next time and see how I go.

The theory is a live bait

Fri, 2010-03-05 15:29

The theory is a live bait will normally be taken head first so the spine dont stick in when it is being swollowed so unless it takes two bites at the live bait you will not hook up with it in the tail, if the hook is in the shoulder you would stand a better chance of getting a hookup. thats just mo anyway.
