Why is Marmion reef so uneventful (shore fishing)
Submitted by br3nno on Mon, 2024-04-01 18:51
I'm talking North Beach area, from the MAAC club to Trigg. For tailor.
Also chuck Iluka and Burns beach in the mix.
In theory all the structure and reef should produce. But the only time I get tailor is when I fish on the sandy/southern side of Trigg. Once a 62cm model.
throwing lures around Marmion reef has caught me more wrasse than tailor.
Does anyone else share this view?

Can't give you an answer as I've had the same problem! A mate caught a ripper on a popper at Watermans Bay but that was it - just the one. I've snorkelled around and seen some good whiting but never tailor.

Glad I'm not the only one!
Glad I'm not the only one! Yeah I've seen some good bream, whiting and even skippy around the reefs also snorkelling. But tbh I'm just hyper focused on tailor

worth a snorkel?
If you get a chance a snorkel over the reef area might be worth it. Further south around Cottesloe they can be seen in 1-2m depths on the reef areas right next to the beach. Here is a pic just nprth of the Cottesloe main beach, taken in January a couple of years ago. They school the same way a few hundred metres further south of the groin. I don't think it is nescessarilly because of baitfish, although that happens sometimes, but they seem to like small sort of bays/indents in the reef front to hold up in the day. Have seen the same in shallow areas of bays along the northside of Rotto. Sometimes they can be very localised and only hang in a hole or reef gap a few metres wide.

Those about 40-42
I seem to catch two different size classes, some 38-42 and a bigger class 48-52. Those are probably 2-3 year old and 4-5 year old respectively, so there must have beendecent recruitment to the local stock the last few years.

Maybe the issue is they hang
Maybe the issue is they hang on the inshore reefs off Hillarys and further north instead? I know those reefs definitely hold tailor at times.

Conditions-
Hey mate,
As this area is pretty much my standard local, it can sometimes fish pretty well if you know what conditions and time of year to fish it. specifically at the MAAC have pulled tailor to 70cm on lures, large yellowfin whiting on both lures and baits, buff bream (on fly), and other fish such as sharks/rays/smaller pinkies on larger baits dropped in sand holes.
Also plenty of skippy and herring if you know what you are doing.
And lost an approx 15kg mulla on lures last year there too,
Just takes time to work out the conditions that hold the fish, but for a start clean water, big swell, (there isn't really too big as long as the water is still clean), and having good tides is always good for tailor.
But have caught them in dead still dirty water, on pretty much all times of day and moon, but there are certainly times that produce well.
Have also fished most of the stretch you talked about, but just about covering the ground and fishing the conditions, and understandding it takes time to work it out.
Good luck and happy fishing,
Josh
(also if you sink your lures a bit more over the sandy patches you will pick up some very big flathead )

I just need to spend some more time then Josh. I've tried different conditions without success but need to be more specific then. I've seen some lovely fat yellowfin whiting in front of the MAAC. Watched a guy drone fishing from the MAAC carpark a little while ago but wasn't aroung to see if he caught anything.
