who to trust

Hi checked my boat battery today as it has been sitting for 4 weeks, the voltage was 12.26 Volts, just to make sure I rang a well known battery supplier and was told "the battery is dead flat, bring it in and we will see if it can be recharged" , thought that this advise was a bit strange, as I have had no trouble with it in the past. So I rang an Auto Electrician who said "flat at 12.26 Volts, you have to be joking, they are just trying to sell you a new battery" so I guess it pays to check with a reputable business.

Hey bud spent 10yrs in a previous life as a mechanic, checking volts donsnt tell you that much about your battery condition though 12.26 volts shows theres charge in there. Sitting for 4 weeks as long as nothing has been draing the battery shouldnt worry it.
If your concerned about it the best way to test it is charge it fully up then load test the battery. Best way to look arfter your battery if its not getting much use is to dissconect it from the boat and connect it to a automatic trickle charger

<12.3V
Had a similar issue with car battery. Was measuring 12.25v and not starting. Was informed by in-law mechanic that any battery measuring less than 12.3V is generally not ok. Resting voltage of healthy battery charged by alternator should be approx 12.7V. New battery fixed my issue anyway. Good luck
Should clarify, <12.3V advice from mechanic was for any battery older than two years. Apparently after two years they can fail at any time.
