Who thinks it's time for a new better burley?????
Submitted by dowie55 on Thu, 2010-01-28 19:30
Hi
I love my fishing, but i am finding that the available burleys just aren't as good as they say they are. I have recognised that there is room for a new product and have got a good recipe, if you want to call it that.
Would people like to see it on the shelf?
And is anyone want to give it a go to test it when its made to test it????
Thankyou
Tom
p.s- please note the product hasnt yet been made and i am still working on it so it could be a while, just lookign to see if people agree with me.

Used fast food oil
My Grandad use to go and get the old oil from the local Chicken Treat. It worked really well just mixing it up with some old bread or whatever he had. Used with bread, it holds really well on a burley cage. I suppose you could use chook pellets though or pollard. He use to make/breed the biggest, juiciest "wogs" (maggots) too. He would dip them in the oil just before threading them on the hook and when everyone else was struggling to catch a fish, we would be winding them in one after the other. Dunno if it was the oil or the maggots? Not quite sure why he ever called them wogs either?
I fish for the future - Cause I can't bloody catch anything!

Mincer
Head to the local swap meets or second hand shop and buy an old hand mincer.Fix it on to the side of your boat and any soggy mulies, fish frames etc just run them through and straight over the side.Works wonders.
Another one is to mince leftover bait at home in to an ice cream container, drop a heavy sinker in it with a bit of line hanging out then freeze it.Next time out just tie the loose line to a light rope/heavy line and drop it down to the bottom. They usually last for ten-fifteen minutes depending on water temps

Mincer
What happens to the ice cream container when the berley runs out? is the container tied to the rope somehow?

Remove
Remove the plastic container BEFORE you drop it over the side or run the line through a hole near the lip.

Burley
If you need testers i'd give it a shot here down south. Best of luck with it, a decent burley would be gold.
Most of us already make our own for this reason though. And im pretty sure another guy makes a pretty deadly batch once a year on here..SPESS?? From memory i think he had trouble getting it onto the big market..correct me i could be wrong.
Mind the smell, ive been fishing!

i agree with huggyB. No, i'd
i agree with huggyB. No, i'd rather make my own. Though i would give it a test run. But any true-hearted fisho would rather make their own and keep their self created formula close to their chest IMO. I dont think any recipe will sell more than it does. If anything its selling less n less because ppl are learning to make their own. A good idea though is, berley has to be started somewhere and pollard is always a must, soooo.... A good or better pollard would be a good idea which WILL sell and catch more fishos. Not just that, if a good pollard is made, u never know, companies making berley might want a peice of the action to improve theirs. So all in all, good recipe for pollard is gold.

pollard
is so 2008. No self respecting burley would be caught dead with pollard in 2010.....

Ive been doing Landbased
Ive been doing Landbased fishing for year now.. and burley is a big part of what is needed for successful fishing.. Cant always change your spot to find the fish, so burley up and bring them to you!
We are able to get 1-5kg burley 'bombs' of many different mixes. Pilchard and Bontio, Kina ( Sea urchant) and mussell, Salmon ( fresh water salmon).. in NZ which come frozen in plastic and can then be dropped into a sack to disperse as the tide hits it, or dropped into a bucket to ladel out as needed. Or dropped into a cage with weights if your fishing from a boat and dropped to desired depth.
I would always go through the freezer a couple times a year and use a hand mincer to rip up the leftover baits from previous trips, Bonito/pilchard/mullet/.. squid ( doesnt mince too well unless its frozen), fish frames, shellfish (shells work well too) ... and then add fish oil,Bags of oily pilchards, old chicken frames, oats, pig/chicken pellets, old rice, any left overs from dinner that i have frozen. Dont think there are too many bag things that can go into your burley.
Put it all into bags that would be suitable for the sacks we use off the rocks and then freeze up. Ice Cream container work well, but are a little on the small side. 3kg is optimal for what we needed.
If your serious, hit up your local butchers/seafood mongers and see what you can get off them. As long as its fresh, it will do the trick.
