Dolphins scare the shit out of me when they pop up right next to ya lol. I just see a fin go 'woosh' only a couple of meters away from the yak, only to see a couple of them playin around about a minute later.

I think it's fair to say that bloke left a nice aqua dump in the water before being hauled to safety...scary moment

Tiger

Fri, 2009-10-30 20:06

If my memory is correct this female tiger was caught in a shark net off Durban south somewhere and they tried to help it but found it in the net the next day again they tend to do this when tired. I saw the local "parks board" in my home town Richardsbay just 179km north of Durban putting baited drum lines offshore for sharks back between 2001 and 2005 instead of using shark nets. Then they got a shark of 1098kg on a new drum days after a diver was taken by a shark futher up north on the coast at St Lucia where police divers only got he's one foot and flipper and a partial of the other flipper. A police diver did say in that dive while looking for the body he saw a tiger shark at over 5m above him, makes you think why we still dive ha.

Hence the reason why I bought a boat and sold the fishing ski!

White Pointer

Fri, 2009-10-30 21:18

It is a white pointer as stated not a tiger.Have a look at its snout, pointed not blunt like a tiger, the teeth are even shaped not off set like a tiger and last of all have a look at the tail, top and bottom halves are even,a tigers tail is approx 2/3 top and 1/3 bottom.Forget the stripes because pointers can have them as well

The underside tips of the pectoral fins have black marks which you see on great whites but not tigers.

Maybe the stripes are just blood running down?

Could have been alot worse.

I'm still not keen to paddle around the Sound after hearing about a couple of big ones in the area. I can't remember if they were great whites or what..

However it's a risk we all take with ocean yakking, i usually stick to the river lol.

Shorty, how far out do u go when u hit the ocean?

We generally don't go past the 5 fathom bank in the kayaks, its probally the ones that cruise near the shore thats the problem (GW at Woodys boat ramp last month etc) the Sounds are chockers with sharks this time of year, i am sticking with bream fishing down Mandurah way at the moment.

I do wonder if anybody will get taken one day walking across to Penguin island in the dark with tommorows Abalone season start.

Sat, 2009-10-31 11:36

Don't get
Tigers down at the south coast of Cape Province, water is too cold, they stick much further north in Kwazuluz/ Natal and into Mozambique.

Shark would have gone to the fisheries research center in Durban for analysis, as part of the Natal Sharks Board's ongoing program to protect the bathers as well as the sharks,

lots of work being done on the nets becoming more shark friendly by the RSA guys.

ps the famous pic of the MichaelScholl in the kayak with the GW following him from Cape Town is a Swiss mate of mine who has been doing shark research in False Bay, Hermanus and the East Cape Coast line for over 15 years.

here is their website for more info.
http://www.whitesharktrust.org/

unfortunately with the GFC they lost most of the last sponsorship and their program looks like it's going to die. Pity, as it was a great step forward in shark behavior and management information. In 2007 they had to cut back the program too it's bones, but now it's dead...sad

quote"White Shark Trust Epilogue or Intermission?

(Update 1st of February 2007)

Despite considerable and continuous efforts to locate and secure the required sponsorship and funding during the past few years, the White Shark Trust and Michael Scholl were unfortunately unable to secure the necessary funds to continue the field research and the general activities of the Trust.

Hence the White Shark Trust ceased its activities in South Africa for an undertermined period of time. Michael Scholl decided to relocate to his home country of Switzerland for the present time in order to work on the photographic identification database and the research accumulated over the past decade. Check out his blog: www.MichaelScholl.info

The Great White Shark photographic identification research project and its associated population structure and dynamics research project started in October 1997 and continued for nearly a decade until January 2007. It is a shame that the longest continous research project on any population of White Sharks in the world had to come to an end due to lack of funding and lack of support from the South African authorities."

At the Risk

Sun, 2009-11-01 15:53

Of many of you thinking Im a mean, nasty ,son of a B,that is still the sort of Great White photos I like to see,my view is when they start co existing with humans that happen to want to swim, ski, surf, dive,or whatever, even yak paddlers,I much prefer reading of shark demise and not human.all credit to those who admire these wonderful creatures but I saw what was left of Mr. R (Bob) Bartel in 1968? not nice,I do not think we should kill them all but there is a definite increase in the number being seen around populated (water activity) areas, in the past 5 years.and as I do not think,( may be proven wrong) that sharks have wives, children, husbands and a whole group of close family, like humans do,dont worry,it will never happen, after all, there are a lot more humans.jersey
