Where they're small, they're big too?
Hey guys,
Went out in the Sound today just targeting squid and whiting and we managed to get a couple sand whiting in 4-7m and then we got 9 squid all up mostly in about 4-5m of water. The Sound was very murky. However in one particular spot we managed to get a few undersized pink snapper (all caught on fresh squid tentacles - all returned too), around 35-40cm, they were good fun on 1000 size Sienna reels!! This was in about 8-10m of water, just wondering if your experiences if where there are small pinkies, are there also big ones? Marked the spot on the gps just in case we return soon for some sized ones! Also caught this fish which I haven't actually seen before, looks like a wrasse and a whiting have got together and created this?? Haha
cheers for any comments guys!

Not too sure about the
Not too sure about the snapper, but makes sense that in the right conditions there would be good ones. Fish looks like a weed whiting but I may be wrong

Yeah it certainly looked
Yeah it certainly looked like a whiting except for the colours and I've been fishing all my life and haven't seen one of these before...but I don't do a lot of metro boat fishing, usually only north and south.

Your mystery fish is a Blue
Your mystery fish is a Blue Weed Whiting (Haletta semifasciata).
It's name is a bit misleading, because it is in fact a wrasse (Labridae) and not a whiting (Sillaginidae).
As for the snapper, well from my experience, sometimes when you catch juvenilles you will also catch legal ones, wheras sometiems you'll only get juvies. I usually find that if you're getting ones in the 35-40cm range you're on some semi decent ground and there's a good chance you will get a bigger one.

Same as daniel y, if you're catching 40cm fish you could be on a half decent spot, but if its just those 15-20cm pesky things theyre just everywhere

Weedy whiting, Caught plenty
Weedy whiting, Caught plenty (here is SA), if reasonable size worth keeping - they don't taste too bad (surprisingly) - nice white flesh
